The quickest way to NOT get a speed challenge is to request a speed challenge. It's kinda like saying out loud when a pitcher has a no-hitter going. ;)

Sorry, I couldn't think of another analogy on the spot...

It's considered bad luck to actually say out loud that a pitcher has a no-hitter (a game where the other team has not gotten a hit off of that pitcher) going. Some other common baseball superstitions:

Spitting into your hand before picking up the bat is said to bring good luck.
A wad of gum stuck on a player's hat brings good luck.
It is bad luck if a dog walks across the diamond before the first pitch.
Some players believe it is good luck to step on one of the bases before running off the field at the end of an inning.
It is bad luck to touch the baselines while running off and onto the field between innings.
Lending a bat to a fellow player is a serious jinx.
Some players actually sleep with their bat to break out of a hitting slump or stay in a groove.
If a pitcher is throwing a perfect game or a no-hitter, never speak of it while it's going on.

Which makes me think that "Superstition" would be a neat speed challenge idea... hmm...

runs out and gathers up all the black cats in the neighborhood! I'm ready!!!

Thanks Laurie, all I need now is to watch a game so I can spout all this wonderful info and appear a real baseball expert!!!

It seems more full of superstition than football, sorry , soccer!

The tv commentators do have this habit of saying how well a player is passing the ball as he gives it away to the opposition and how great a goalkeeper is as he lets in a goal even I could save! I think the individual players are very superstitious about their kit or routines before taking the field.

Superstitions could be a great challenge - 13 could be a regular entry in some way or ladders!!
