ok. without reading this whole thread, I'll give my 2 cents. I've always owned PC's, but I've used macs for graphic design at work and at art school.

What you said about Mac's being used for graphic design is true. it isn't because they're better, or faster, it's because they break less often and are easier to fix than a pc, in general. Companies and schools like this because it means less money spend on tech-support. Macs also look cool (and I think cheesy and unprofessional, but that's just my opinion, but they have that cool big screen) so they attract students!

For home use, however, especially if you are interested in watching dvd's, gaming, or more complex 3d modeling, etc., pc's are far superior to mac's. Mac's simply aren't made for these applications. They will break down more often and drive you crazy, but it's the price you have to pay (even though PC's are cheaper, if you want a really good one you are going to end up paying more for it than you would a lower end mac that looks nice? and is made to run simple operations and never break down or confuse you). Do not buy a cheaper PC or try to put your own together unless you really know what you're doing and enjoy that sort of challenge.

Overall, I would recommend Pc's for someone who really wants to do a lot with their computer, but Macs for most people who want less frustration and are really doing only minimal things. However, I agree with otsaku...they will all eventually drive you crazy, esp. if you are working with both and try to use them together. I've destroyed enumerable computers doing video editing. I can't live with them but I can't live without them. It makes me sad to see the state of the industry. They are wasting time, money, and research on gimmicks and things that the average user doesn't really need. All we need is something more reliable.

Oh, the best advice I can give about frustration is to never ever use a zip drive. I used to go through one every two weeks or so and about 50% of the disks would eventually fail. I only use CD's now.

PCs are stable and have minimal problems unless you have a rubbish one, dodgy hardware, a tendency to fiddle when you don't know what you're doing, or Windows 9x/Me. Macs can be just as unstable as an old Pentium 166 running Windows 98, only when they crash they crash hard.

Macs have minimal security and aren't really designed for networking.

Macs are way overpriced. What you're paying for is a turnkey solution. The sad part is that these days they use a lot of standard PC parts anyway.

My experience contradicts the above on all points.

Well thats why we are all wonderful, we all have our own opinions.

people who are trying to convince other people on these computer preference issues : give it up. it'll never ever happen :)

the ONLY way a person is going to ever change their view is if they directly experience something which changes it (like I did). until that point in time, people listening to other people's opinion about their chosen platform was about as effective at changing my opinion as trying to mop up the Pacific Ocean with a paper towel ... :)

Currently I use both mac's and PC's and I have to say I preffer using a mac. I got a PC cause it's cheaper to upgrade and when I was just on a mac it seemed like there was loads more PC software, but now I have a PC there isn't really any usefull software i use that you cannot get on the mac.

I find that if you have a problem with the mac's OS you can simply fix it in the system folder. But on my PC you have to go into the dreaded windows folder which just confuses me and if it was a bad prob I end up reinstalling windows.

I still sometimes use a mac LC475 25MHZ which is 13 years old. It still runs photoshop well enough though and it's not that slow really

I use both MAC and PC equally, but for different purposes, I use my MAC for photoshop, MAYA and internet, I use my PC for photostation pro, 3DsMax and Autocad, I use both for office documens (word, Excel, Powerpoint), I use both for gaming.

the MAC and PC are very similar in most cases, I have a G5 dual 2GHz and it outperforms all PC´s except the dual 3GHz Xeon and the dual AMD64, those 3 score equally on most performance tests.

the MAC has one thing that makes it better for photoediting then any windows based system, IT DOES NOT FREEZE so you loose your work, the PC does.

I took my final exam in photoshop last tuesday on a DELL PC optimized for Photoshop, it froze twice when I was almost finished with the test, so I had to do the project 3 times to graduate, the mac I have is being used in photoshop about 6 hours every day for the past year, the only reeboots it has had is because of software update, no bluescreens, frozen software or lost work. that is tha main reason why mac is so popular amongst graphic designers.

it's not just mac or PC. i use pc, because i started with pc and i just do not want to get used to other, i like it. but even in pc's there are many differences. for example AMD works not as good in graphics as pentium, but AMD is better for the gamers. So which pc you use?

By the way, this thread subject is right up there with these:

Liberal vs. Conservative
Pro-Life vs. Pro-Choice
Michael Jackson: Pop-god or Pedophile?
and of course: Creationism vs. Evolution

Post any of these topics with the disclaimer that you don't want to get into a heated debate and see what happens. :-)

Quite fun to watch sometimes though.

I have AMD XP2500 with 1GB DDR, a nice PC and does just about everything I want it to do, I just don´t trust it with my photoshop work, working on a 500MB image that is 14000x21000 pixels is just too much for the PC, but the mac handles it like it aint no thing ;)

I'm an audio man. I have Cubase at home on my G4, which is my recording and audio editing program. I don't know how I would get anything done if it weren't for the mac. Pro audio software on PC's has a lot of catching up to do. When you have 10 Midi devices (keyboards, drum machines, samplers, fx processors, etc.) networked with Cubase, you really need a Mac with OMS (Open Music System) interface.

My Mac (and OSX) was created by God, and is therefore perfect in every way. PCs (and DOS/Windows) evolved from lower forms and are thus replete with hacks, organs that don't work, and they're just, oh so biologically yucky.

LOL - True, the apple was created by God, but then if you remember in Genensis, He said "Don't touch it!" ;-)

Think you got that one reversed...AMD is better Graphic (hence better gamer)...Wintels are better number crunches...

I use both. PC for Web(Design and Programming ASP) and the Mac for Graphics and Photography. I honestly think the PC is all together an easier computer to use but my Fiance might say different...
