I'd suggest letting your work speak for itself. Pick a half dozen of your best shots ... landscape, people, commercial, macro etc to showcase the breadth of your talent. Use photoshop to create an 8x10 collection showing all 6. Include that with your typed resume that basically says you'll respond quickly to any news event that happens so they can make their deadlines.

Well, mostly I think papers are goig to be looking for direct experience. If you don't have that. I'd suggest rather than trying to cook up some BS lines (which may be true, but will still sound like BS)

I'd try to put together a nice looking portflio with images that could be used in a journalistic type view, and send that in. Be creative, I know it's not an art photographer set, but they'll want to see that you can give a new perspective to the same old stuff. Something that will catch people's eye over the other papers on the stand.

Mostly, they want to make sure you're obsesses with photography, as any employer wants to hire someone who is obsessed with their work, rather than someone who just does it.

I'd definitely use the pic of the framed carpenters. Choice stuff.

Also, avoid the use of any heavily edited pictures. Just in case you didn't know, journalistic editors don't usually take anything that's not an original with minor color/contrast adjutments. There have been a few cases of photographers that have been fired for getting too happy with photoshop.

Sample resume from a random website found whilst googling. :)

Some general resume tips... keep it to one page, use good paper, list references with GOOD contact information on the same page (one of my biggest pet peeves as an HR manager was "references available upon request"), and use a cover letter. Follow up a few days after you send it in, either in person or with a phone call. The interested birds get more chances to get to the worm. :)
