Black Magic Woman II Black Magic Woman III
The first image is the original idea... I converted the photo to black and white and then added a minor amount of tone back to the image...
The second image is the same shot, but I duplicated the original layer, added gaussian blur, and then decreased the opacity to about 45% or so to get the 'glow' effect...

Wasn't there a picture on the challenge this week with a similar name? I'll hafta research that one further.
I'm torn here John... I like them both. Probably the first one more than the second. I really like the glow on the second one, but you've done it at the expense of the lighting and highlights to the black piece.
But I wouldn't be taking my word for the gospel if I was you.

The crispness in II is superb. The fogginess in III, I liked at first, but overall seems to blur the image and it loses its sharpness. I think the lighting is good enough atmosphere so that you don't have to haze it up.
Very nicely composed though.

The haze in III is nice, but I think I prefer II. |

For this composition, I also vote for the non-glowing version. But that might work with a tableau featuring the White Bishop... Maybe it's the small file size or JPEG effect, but it looks like there's some artifacts right along the highlighted edges of the white piece. In a print, I'd try and hold some tonal value there (not let it go to pure white) and be very careful with (or omit) sharpening. |

Do you see this in both shots? I did not, and still don't, see what you are talking about :(

I think it's just a monitor/display issue. I have noticed some difference in the quality with which different browsers display images, and I don't think this is the better one. I have to leave for work, but I'll check in the other browser when I get home...if it's OK at 100% in Photoshop I wouldn't worry! This will make a nice series... |
