There is a button for Helpfull comment.
Maybe a button for NON-helpfull comment should be nice.
Sometimes you get comments...... not good enough to feed the dogs!

but isn't that the same as not checking the box that says "this comment was helpful"???

I got reamed up one side and down another for not checking the helpful box for one lowly comment, by one particular person on here who shall remain nameless, so now I always checked the helpful box which to me means:
1. comment was helpful
or
2. comment was helpful in determining that the commentor is an idiot and doesn't know what the hell he/she is talking about. : )

Hey if you don't find the comment helpful, don't check it. I don't and if anyone would rant because I didn't check it...well that's just tough. Some comments are just rude. If they don't have constructive critizism, I don't check it.

Well... That's the reason I would reccomand a NON helpfull button.
So you can make the writer clear that you not amused with his/her comment.

you could have a box that if checked it gets counted and when that user has made 1000 "unhelpful" comments thier account gets banned and their pictures deleted :-D

The other thing about this is that I tend to only mark comments helpful if they help me be a better photographer. I still really like comments that say "nice work, I love this picture!" but I don't mark them as helpful because while they are nice, they don't qualify under "helpful" as far as making me a better photographer.

I see a lot of others who mark nearly every comment helpful so sometimes I wonder if it bothers people when I don't mark their comment helpful. heh

Anyhow I'd like a "not helpful" button so the people who give me kudos don't feel that I'm implying something negative when i don't check the "helpful" box. With both helpful and not helpful choices available, unmarked comments don't have a negative connotation.

Either that or have three boxes, heh. Helpful, Not Helpful, and Thanks!

I think we need to do what we can to help to encourage, in a positive and proactive way, people commenting in useful ways on pictures that need it.

I posted a thread about something similar in the "Average vote for comments" thread in website suggestions.

I don't know if anyone thinks that's a good idea. It didn't seem to be well received.

I have posted a new idea in a thread on "Comment Requests".

Please check it out and speak out.

I too do not mark comments as helpful unless their intent was to be actually "helpful". Saying things like "Nice" or "ouch" qualify as comments, and sometimes qualify as pleasant, or mild encouragement, but are on one side of a rather narrow border delineating "helpfulness".

Edit: To the OP, I would imagine that having a Not Helpful box would be a great way to start arguments and incite people to PM you and get angry with you for not marking it as helpful. It seems this is still a fairly rare thing, as this is the first I have read of it happening so far.

I don't think this suggestion in itself is very helpful. We need to encourage people to comment, even those who are not highly technical. I for one would not comment if my comment was going to be graded from helpful to non helpful. I would simply choose to vote and not comment. I tend to mark most comments as helpful, because even the "wow, nice photograph" comments, tend to help you gauge how well your photo is being received. These people have been moved enough by your photo to let you know but they may not have the technical skills to offer how it could be improved. I do get offended when I have taken the time to comment on someones photograph only to have them not think it helpful. (Like I am wasting their time!) I do however think perhaps a report comment button would be good, for those people who go way overboard and are downright rude with their comments. (Luckily, that would never cross the mind of most people on here!)

I have seen it mentioned by a member of the SC that it is reasonable to report rude or deliberately unpleasant comments to SC.

The best way to do this is probably to give an active SC member a PM including the Image Id.

Obviously this is only done in cases of extreme rudeness or when a commenter is exhibiting a pattern of clear belligerence.

The best step is usually to PM the poster and ask them to explain their meaning more clearly in a calm way, perhaps also explaining that you found the comments helpful.

Beyond that, as others have said, try to develop a bit of a thick skin and take the comment "under advisement" aka "file under RECYCLE". The SC will deal with it if it is serious enough.
