I'm trying to get myself a wide angle lens, and while I'm pretty much leaning toward the Canon 17-40mm, as I've seen good things come out of it and it remains in my price range, I still want to get opinions on other wide angle lenses. And while I'm at it, what are some recommended Fish Eye lenses and what are thoughts on the Sigma 170-500mm f/5-6.3? Thanks!

I have Nikkors 17-35 f/2.8 and it is a 1st rate pro lens. Canon's equivelent would be great as well. I also have the Sigma 50-500EX (instead of the 170-500). Attached are some shots with the long lens.

I believe tamron has a lens in the 200-500mm or so range that is supposed to be pretty good for a zoom lens. The tamron 17-35mm is worth looking at. the sigma 18-50mm 2.8 is worth looking at too.

ooh i love fisheyes ...course, u cant get a real one for the canon, unless you get the peleng or sigma 8 mm....but oh the lens flare you'll get with those. the 15mm canon fisheye isnt very fishy on the rebel, however it will do you well as a great wide angle lens. |

sigma makes a superb 15mm fisheye as well.

17-40 isn't especially wide on the 300D; in 35mm terms it's roughly a 28-64mm lens. Anyhting longer than 35mm isn't really "wide angle", and the 64mm end is pretty much a slightly-longter-than-normal lens. On the other hand, Canon makes an outstanding 10-22mm zoom that has zero distortion even at the wide end, and is TRULY wide angle. Many images with it in my landscape portfolio; I'd suggest you consider this lens...

only thing you might want to keep in mind is that the canon 10-22 is an ef-s mount so if you ever plan on upgrading from the 300/350/20D line you will not be able to use this lens.

True, 'dat. In my case, I have no such plans; it's highly unlikely I'll ever be able to afford, or justify, a "full frame" upgrade. But in the event, I can sell the 10-22 for nice change and get the 17-40 :-)

Tamron does indeed make a 200-500mm lens. I have used it extensively and it takes good photos as long as you have good light and keep up the shutter speeds. I bought it instead of the Sigma 50-500EX because I liked the range better. A 10x lens is much harder to keep consistent through the full 50-500 and you will likely use the upper limits most of the time. There are much better lenses out there for the under 200mm range.
here is one example of a shot I took with it.
