Am I right in thinking that 5 should be the average? If so, I am fast realizing that I am below average. What do others use as their average mark? When I vote I usually give a photo that I consider to be average, a 5 or 6. Is this voting too high? |

The average of 1 to 10 scoring is 5.5, thats what I would consider an average vote.

Everybody votes differently. Take a look at some other people's profiles. It will tell you what their average vote cast is, number of votes given, average received, and number recieved, etc... I have given an average 5.4 and received an average of 4.9. Looks like you are in the middle of the pack as well. Also, realize that many of these folks are outstanding photographers. I *know* I am below average, but here to practice and learn. Maybe one day, I'll work my way up to average. :-) |

5.5 is the average of the 1 to 10 scale. But the true average through the rain challenge is 5.2392.

There are 44 challenges where the average is < 5.0000 but what is interesting about that stat, all are open challenges... |

Scott, you always amaze me at how quickly you can compile your statistical data!

I am really amazed at some of the profiles I have looked at. Some people have been given an average of 5.5+ for their photos yet their average for votes given are down at 3's and below. I don't know..maybe they only vote on the bad photos or are they voting down others photos so that they do better? |

Maybe they should make a rule, no voting on challenges you have entered..but then they may not get enough people voting either. |

I think it really is all relative. Personally, I think an average of 5.0 on this site, given the plethora of talent here, is quite a good average. If you'll notice too, many of the best photographers on here still receive scores in the 4.x range from time to time. Of course, they usually have some 7.x scores to help average it out! ;-)
I would suggest benchmarking the average from your first few challenges and then trying to improve on that. Measure against yourself, rather than someone else's score. Just my 2 cents...

I give 1 to photos I really "hate" to see, but I have to vote for; 2 for those snapshot type photos. photos received 1-2 from me are considered as nearly "insulting" to me. Those photos should not be listed with other great works whose creators have paid so much efforts and time on; 3-4 will goes to those normal photos. which I can see the photographers really paid attentions on the works, but because of the inadequate shooting conditions, not-so-good ideas or skills, the photos did not turn out well. 5 is the dividing score to me. All images that capture my eyes for any reasons will receive 5 at first. Then I will sort them again, give different scores. I have hardly given 10 out. only 3 photos, as far as I remember (but I only voted 3 challenges.) 10 is reserved for "perfect". 9 is normally the highest score I would give, and is for photos that truely stand out. 8 is given to excellent photos. 7....6....5....
you get the image. That is how I vote.
As for the lower ave scores for open challenges. In my case,it is because of the basic editing rules. Many good photos that could turn into a great photo by more editings are eliminated by the basic editing rules. Another reason I could think of would be a lower ave skill level of photographers in these challenges. |

Thanks everyone, I am new to this and I really am just wanting to get my head around the huge range of voting. I see some truly wonderful photographs from past challenges and then I see that it was given a 1 rating about 4 times...just has me confused on how people can do that. I guess I do ten to vote on the "potential" of a photograph as well as the theme and technical elements. I think this covers the limitations put on the photo due to basic editing, not as expensive equipment etc.
By the way..I really liked your entry in the live music challenge jinbo...the girl reminded me of a street busker. |

The numbers here are without any reliable or valid method of assessment. 'I like rules' or rather 'I dislike' here. If you really want to vote look at some credible rubrics on assessing photos (art). Otherwise don't sweat it..........it is mostly self-indulgence.

azoychka is saying that the ruling paradigm for voting at DPC is "I Like"/"I Dislike" rather than any rational artistic criteria. |

I do not dislike here so much and this is typical of some here 'attack' but do not answer or discuss. What method of assessment do you use 'doctornick'?

I am indeed 'GeneralE' and that is not necessarily a slame against voters but to fairly assess takes hard work and great care.

Just wondering how you got this number. I calculated that the average "average" score is 5.29688. This is through the Live Music Challenge. Is this the same number? |

There are probably several (inaccurate) ways to create an "average" from the publcally-available data.
Really though, I don't think there's much statistical difference between 5.2392 and 5.29688 .... |

I am puzzled why an average mark based on an inconsistent methodology is important to some people?
