Hi,

I have a question about lenses. Not photo lenses, but eyeglass lenses. I was wondering if any of you have, or know someone who has, Transitions® lenses. The ones that turn into sunglasses when you go out in the sun.

After 4 years, I finally lost my clip-ons. And I am seriously thinking about taking a year long trip to Southest Asia, and instead of getting another clip-on, or a separate pair of sunglasses, I would get the Transitions®, so I wouldn't have two sets of glasses to worry about.

If anyone has them, do you like them? Do they work well? Do the people you know who have them like them? And how much do they cost? I would imagine they are pretty expensive.

Thank you,

Mark

I have transition lenses. I like them. They don't get as dark as you think. Some situations a second pair of dark sunglasses would be good. But they do well for running errands where you are in and out of the car alot. It's better than having to switch glasses all the time. If you have eyeglass insurance it covers some of the cost for having them made. If you dont I would check around with different stores. Some might be cheaper than others.

I have them and like them, but they did take some getting used to. I think they get plenty dark, but because the frame size is so much smaller (and shaped differently) than those of traditional sunglasses they just don't work as well. They are leading a double life, after all, and can't be expected to perform 100% for both applications. And you would look like a total freak indoors if you had a pair sunglasses frames fitted with transitions lenses... people would probably ask you embarrasing questions about how you are getting along with your "condition" if you did that.

Still, they get they job done so smoothly that I plan on buying another pair when these crap out. The cost was not cheap, but it was no more than a "good" pair of sunglasses. Certainly worth it if you're not a lifeguard or someone that needs 100% coverage because you spend hours a day in the sun.

I have them and like them. I'm wearing the second pair of transitions I've owned ... so I guess I liked the first pair enough that when I re-upped due to a prescription change, I got a second pair.

Seriously, if you are going to take a year-long trip to Asia, I'd consider bringing a spare pair of specs. I'll be taking a month-loong trip to China and Tibet and wouldn't leave without a second pair.

I agree with Digital Quixote. Anytime you travel for extended amounts of time. Have a backup.

Thanks guys. I guess i'll look into it. There seems to be a split decision here. But yeah, I guess I should also have a spare pair too. Hmm, but if I do that it negates the reason for getting the Transitions in the first place, huh? I suppose I really should have the spares though.

Thanks again,

Mark

I still have every pair of glasses I have ever owned since 1990. Amazingly, although my script has changed subtly over the years, I can still get along ok with even the oldest pair in a pinch.

Backup pairs just have to work, and unless you have a rapidly deteriorating eye condition your old specks should work just fine in the backup role.

I can use my current glasses as backups, but I still have no sunglasses. So I'll need two pairs of those.
