just an interesting thing i've noticed in life...
one can be 5 minutes late to work repeatedly and called into the office for it, regardless of the fact that the same individual might work late 10-15 minutes a day. The latter is acceptable, even demandable to get the job done....but the first is heinous.....why???? |
I have never thought about that before. I just want them to SHOW UP. |

Don't worry Mandy! I'll be your new fitness coach! :p
And I'm over 20! :)
We used to have the same problem with young people at my old work, but then we picked up a couple of guys who were young and really did work hard! Needless to say they are still there. |

As an employer we make the schedule so that people arrive at a specific time. This is so that we know when to expect someone and then can get any personel off the clock that were already there. In most businesses it is standard practice to inform employees that they are to be ready for work at the time scheduled but their end time is subject to variances in business.
When I was Asst. Manager of Pizza Hut we changed the schedule to include a specific start time, but changed the end times to reflect who got to leave first, second, third, fourth.... There was no specific end time (unless there were special circumstances).
We explained that due to the customer we could not gaurantee that the employee would be able to leave at a specific time. If they did leave they could end up leaving the restaurant short handed and customer service would decline. If it declined far enough we would have customers leaving and not coming back. Which would mean laying off employees. We would apologize if someone stayed later than they expected, but it's a business. You, as an employee, are expected to work to certain standards. If you cannot then you will not be employed any more.
If an employee doesn't show up it inconviences everyone. All that has to happen is for one or two employees to be late and it can throw off a whole shift. If the person doesn't show up (especially in these times when cost of labor is kept at a minimum)those employees that are scheduled are needed more than ever.
Now, if we talk about the employee that stays late on a consistent basis, the question then becomes..WHY? Is it because they are late arriving to work? Someone else was late? Someone else didn't show up? Can the employee actually do the job in the time allowed? Did circumstances change at work where the delay in leaving was unforseen?
In all cases of me keeping an employee late it was generally due to another employee not doing their job, or the customer demanded that the employee stay (too busy to let them leave).
IMO, I think more and more employees are thinking that they are entitled to things that they aren't. When you have a job it is good ethical behavior to show up on time (or show up at all). It is also good ethical behavior not to leave your coworkers in a lurch by demanding to leave as soon as the clock strikes five. Nobody will want to help someone in the future if all that person is interested in is themselves. Work is a team effort and sometimes people are asked to put out more than their fair share. However, sometimes the person that is not doing their share could be the person that tomorrow could do extra.
As for not wanting to hire another young person....Yes, it is technically discrimination, however, if you were in the same situation you may feel the exact same way (I know I would). It's like the boy who cried wolf. The first couple of times he yelled all the villagers came running, but after a while they grew tired of his games and stoppeed playing. It's the same with Mandy. She is tired of the game and doesn't want to play.
Legally, she can discriminate all she wants to. However, if she ever gives a prospective employee the reason they weren't hired was because of their age, then it's grounds for a lawsuit. If all she says is I don't have a job for you (and doesn't give a reason) then she can hire whoever she wants.
Discrimination is everywhere. Mandy obviously didn't discriminate yet. She's hired the young employees, they didn't work out. She is now going to try to hire some older employees and see if they work. She would probably hire a young employee again if that person presented themselves in a professional manner. She was just announcing her frustration at the situations she was put into. |

I am one lucky parent - my daughter has never been lazy in regards to a paying job (just chores at home, lol) She could not wait until she hit her 14th birthday so she could go out and get a "real job". She spent that birthday going all around town putting in apps and copies of her work permit. She got hired by the grocery store a week later. She stayed at that job for 2 1/2 years, only missing 2 or 3 days. She had to give the job up when we moved. Now she is working another job, and they give her all the hours they can as they know she will be on time, and work hard. She is just 18 years old.
On the other hand - I have witnessed the other youths she works with. Most are truly lazy. They want the paycheck, but are not willing to work for it. Even my daughter complains about them.
Too bad you aren't near her art college in Detroit - she would make a great worker for you.

Actually, hearing about good workers may help Mandy get over her aversion to them. Or it may frustrate her even more. Either way. I like to hear about good employees over bad ones (even though the bad employees usually bring up funnier stories). My first job was McDonalds. I transfered to another one after 6 months and worked there for over 3 years (leaving as shift manager). I KNOW there are good kids today, but like I mentioned, the bad ones are just sooo bad they overshadow the good ones.
Kevin, keep up the good work. |

When I was in High School, I worked at Hardees. They put me at the drive thu window and I hated it. I got mocked constantly because of my strong southern accent. But I did do a good job. After 9 months, I was promoted to Customer Service Manager (whatever that is), but then I moved back to live with my Father and had to quit.

This brings to mind an amusing story. I use to manage a moving company, and one day I was interviewing this man. After telling him about the hours (I generally had the movers come in and hit the road at 7:30), he says to me "Well, I ride the bus, and I don't like to get up that early, so I would be about a half hour late everyday. Would that be a problem?"
I had to fight real hard not to bust out in laughter, and just wrapped the interview up rather quickly.

That reminds me of a funny story too. I used to work for a publishing company training employees how to use the software to prepare pages for print. I was training this one lady and I told her "with your mouse, go to start, programs,...etc", well she PICKS UP THE MOUSE AND PLACES IT ON THE MONITOR!!! Can you believe that? I thought I was going to pee on myself. I had to get away from her so I wouldn't laugh. |

BAck in the day...... When I managed a business I actually had a kid (well about 19 years old) tell me that he would work harder IF I gave him a raise! I just told him it didn't necessarily work in that order. |

I agree that a lot of young people have no work ethic. But I have to say that some do, I'm twenty years old been working since I was 13. Waited table from 13-18. From 18-19 I was an assistant manager at a Caseys General Store. And now I work at a newspaper, I do ad sales and compositon and also photography for the paper. So, some young people are not losers but some are. Hope you have better luck from now on. |

No kidding.
where I work, there's this bathroom that has a sign on the outside that says "Women". What's up with that? |

Gyms for women were created because many women don't feel comforatble working out next to a man doing squats and staring at their boobs. Ever watch CSI Vegas? (serial killer who meets women on a trial membership at a gym and then kills them?)
Mandy, good luck with your hiring process!

The only good thing Mandy is you can fire them. Try working for the government, they just promote them to get rid of them in their area, ya can't fire um. |

Come to the construction industry, where the pool of applicants is either the guy who knows what he's doing, but wants waaaaaay too much money, or the crackhead that is two weeks away from going back to jail. We are lucky to find someone decent enough to hire, much less someone that will work for more than a week. Sometimes the work gets to people (it's not easy being a laborer - heavy lifting, hot and dirty work, no sitting, constant movement, safety concerns, unfashionable workwear, etc), but most of the time, people just crap out. Occasionally, we get the people that only want to work for a few days or a few weeks so they can get some cash. Occasionally, we get the guys who work and never come back to get their checks...now THAT, is a dumbass.

I've seen the equipment in Curves. It's doesn't even come close enough to being "strong" enough for men to build muscle with :-)
Seriously, men and women generally like to work out in different ways. My theory is that women get intimidated by men lifting heavy weights, but my wife says that we're noisy, rude and that we sweat and stink too much. |
