I have two choices.
1. Good camera + show tomorrow = good picture, risk of hurt camera. (Assuming the venue lets me in.)
2. Bad camera + show tomorrow = bad picture, no risk.
What to do, what to do... |

I've tried concert shots with the HP. They were all blurry. All but three, and those were bad. Argh. |

I think a change in venue is in order. Have you thought of a Baroque music recital instead?

Hmm, got to keep eyes and ears open for any gigs or concerts.. otherwise I'll have to persuade my girlfriend to pose with her harmonica. I put my trust in (real) live music. :> |

There's an ice cream truck that passes by my apartment every once in a while. Does that count? |

I was going to suggest a live band of toads and frogs singing "music" in my backyard |

Nice to see a challenge where studio shots are no-no :-)

To coincide with the get-out-and-shoot member challenge on monday (Rain), find some live music to photograph. Good luck!
Sorry but anyone submitting an indoor gig will get a big fat zero - the challenge wording obviously requires an outdoor live music event in the rain !!
;-)

Risk? Life is a risk. for a concert I would bring the best you have. You know there will be a lot of low light and you need something that can handle that. First I would call and find out if it is OK to bring a camera.

Take out accidental damage on your camera equipment on your home insurance. Everyone should do this anyway with DSLRs!
I certainly felt easier when I spilt a whole glass of hot red wine all over my camera. Luckily it survived unscathed anyway. |

Good luck getting a photo...they're pretty elusive! Certainly are noisy - right now the tree frogs are so noisy here at night you can't have a normal conversation outside. It's kinda cool! ;^)

Come on guys, there are SO many local gigs all over the world. Are you all telling me that you have no gigs on at a local bar/club/pub/theatre this week? Follow the gig mentoring thread for advice on how to get your camera in there... don't just turn up and try to take photos without speaking to anybody.

Update:
I took the camera with me. Got some great shots, and I'm very happy with my entry. :) |

This might have been acceptable (entered for news challenge...) of course the dilemma is as Singe says.... good camera = may not be allowed in.... bad camera = naff shot!

Ha - there are no clubs in Williamstown and the one bar there is is not even big enough to hold 50 people - 6 barstools, half dozen tables. Cannot take a camera onto any campus event or theater event. Closest pub that has live music I called - no cameras allowed of any kind. I even called two of the churches in the area known to have choirs - no, no pictures allowed. My neighbors refused to let me photo them while singing in the shower...so no, no live music this week.

You offered your photos for free in return for being allowed to take photos of a nobody local band in a small pub and you got turned down? If I just called local venues and asked if I was allowed a camera, I would just get turned down... did you just ask a straight question or did you introduce yourself first and offer anything in return before they had a chance to say no? |

I wasn't even allowed to finish my first sentence before he spouted off about no cameras and hung up.
You have to remember that this is one area outside of Hollywood where you see what are considered famous people walking down the street every day.

I got two shots in California on vacation, but I'm in a quandry as to which one to use. One has a true urban feel and yet the other evokes a wild energy of the band. AUGHHHHH

I got lucky. Today, 40 artists performed all over the centre of Luxembourg City.
I tried what I've been reading in most candid threads: get up close. None of them seemed to feel unconfortable, some of them even reacted in a positive way and posed or implemented me into their performance!

I got a (nice?!) candid shot in the end... there are actually no shortage of 'live' performers in London... handily.
