...the continuing chronicles of my freelancing
this was a fairly straight-forward assignment: "RMC students working on summer research project on something called the Dengue Virus, a mosquito-transmitted desease. One of the kids working doing the research is from Jamaica and has seen the disease first hand. She wants to help eliminate it."
when i got there, i met the reporter, the four summer research associates, and their professor. it was really an interesting experience, not just learning about what they were doing, but mainly from seeing how these young people were learning how to express complex scientific processes in layman's terms. they also presented an interesting dynamic as there were two males and two females, and the boys and the girls had been working somewhat independently of each other.
my challenge was to find an image that would bring all four of them together in a way that would help illustrate the article. i quickly honed in on this piece of equipment called a 'rotating evaporator'. i got the four of them onto the same side of the table and started shooting. i realized that it just wasn't working--so i climbed up and stood on a stool. it just so happened that the stool could spin, meaning i had gotten myself into a somewhat precarious perch (i really should start shooting self-portraits when out on these assignments...).
while i was up there, they explained that they used dry ice to make the process work. i said, "cool. do you have any?" sure--and they all bolted from the lab to go get it, leaving me teetering up on the stool! they were only gone a few minutes, but it seemed like forever.
and when they got back, i got my shots. here's one of them:
i only submitted 3 to the paper, and here's the one they used:
i'll say it again that i am absolutely loving this 16-35 super wide angle, and the way it pulls in a whole room. |
