Hmmm....I must go to bed...1:30am here!

I went for a more subtle approach! It's very difficult and a lot of what I tried didn't look right!

Burnt on the background
created a levels adjustment layer and tried your 'enchance monochromatic contrast' thingie
adjusted the contrast a little.

Now I must sleep!

ok. Sorry about previous post:
-layer for dodging and burning
-color dodge layer with opacity 44% and fill 57%
-unsharp mask with high radius and threshold (don't have exact numbers) and then fade unsharp mask
-selective color layer
-two levels, one normal, one enhance monochromatic stuff
-curves adjustment layer
-contrast brightness adjustment layer on first one only!
-added border
Lot harder than it looks, and I can't wait to find out how you do your magic, heida.
Cheers
Will try again later if I have time

Wow, I have no idea how you did that... this was as close as I could come which isn't very close. I really can't wait to find out how you did your edit.

Okay, I have to get back to work now.

Another day another attempt...
Here is a second attempt to match heida's edit. I still can't get the colors right and I can't exactly match the 'look' but I think I'm a lot closer with this one. (steps are on the photo page)

I couldn't quite get the same moodiness, and I think the colors a bit off:

PP, the layer stack goes:
1.Photo Filter Layer (warm, 55%)
2.Brightness/Contrast (+10/+20)
3.Levels (0, 1.0, 190)
4.Hue/Saturation (master -6)
5.Selective Color:
-Yellow (cyan -52, black +100)
-Green (cyan -40, black +100)
-White (black +50)
-Neutral (black +12)
-Black (black -2)
6.Copy of BG (opacity 35%, gaussian blur 1.0)
7.Background

Other PP on the background:
Dodging on the tree, and the bottom middle.
Burning on the bottom middle, in the sky, and on the shed.
Sharpening brush on the shed.
USM (500%, .5px, 0 levels)

This one is close too but not quite. I think I missed some very important steps but here is a brief run-down of what I did:

1. Duplicate the layer
2. filter>other>high-pass: 9.8 value
3. change the blending mode to Overlay at 40% opacity
4. warming photo filter above the bottom layer at 64%
5. hue/saturation: desaturate the image slightly
6. dodge and burn the bottom layer as needed
7. adjust brightness/contrast
8. adjust levels
9. smart sharpen
10. Lens Correction (vignetting)

Heida: can't wait to hear about YOUR method. Cheers!

This was as close as I could get.

levels
colour balance
photo filter (sepia)
neat image
hue/saturation
probably other stuff too but thats all I could find in the saved files..

edit: checked the incremental saves and found what I had done

Well, not sure I'm real excited about my effort. Went for a dark, foreboding angle. Steps listed with photo.

I tried to follow HALO's steps and then just wandered off into layer hell. I am not that confident in the steps to take, but here is my try

My newbie attempt. I've been processing images all of about 1.5 weeks now ... My goal was to tone down the greens and give it more of a late summer / autumn feel. Done in Photoshop Elements, so some of the more advanced features aren't available ... but anyway.

Elsapo, your take seems so close to perfect!!

I had a hard time exactly replicating Heida's photo so I went off the road instead (it was late at night)...oops...

I did try dodging and burning and (in Elements) changing the hues of the greens to get closer to her grass color but I could never get the semi sepia tones in the wooden house using hues. I'll try elsapo's method...I have to start learning how to use layers.

I like your 'off the road' processing. It seems to give it more of a fairyland feel.

*edit*- Heidas seems to be a bit colder and softer but I wanted to change it a bit.

Awe come on...it is only 2 AM there...and its Friday night/Saturday Morning, shouldnt you be out on the town? Is the sun up there now? I remember going to Murmansk, Russia in July and it was really freaky to have the sun up all night..=)

Because it was a gif instead of jpg, I think it only supports jpg pics
