When I woke up I was tired. 5 min later I'm still tired and my score hasn't changed.

It's a bit funny that this almost exactly matches my score for the 'Room' challenge where I'm currently standing at 6.5367 after 177 votes, which is merely 0.0006 higher than my score for 'Long exposure'.

Hmmm, I guess I should have waited a little longer to enter my first challenge. (like maybe 10 years or so). I am not so sure if I should be unhappy about the score or unhappy about the apparent apathy that my photo(s) tend to bring to folks as evidenced by the lack of comments I have received in the months I have been a member.

All in all, it is obvious to me I am in over my head in the particular challenge. There are some great images.

Who cares. Did you have fun shooting it and did you learn??? Really thats all that matters isn't it??? I am planning on commenting on all the enteries so give me time to get to yours. If your not a professional then have fun with photography and shoot for you, NOT some web site. Use this site to learn and improve. Altho if I listened to my own advice I'm sure I'd be much better at photography lol. Either way I always have to much fun.

I wouldn't say that this score for the first challenge is anything to be ashamed of - especially with the theme, 'Long exposure', being so technically challenging!
And if you check out this site most favorite photographers you will notice that most of them either got similar scores (and sometimes even lower scores) in their first or one of their first challenges. (You can do this by selecting Community and Site Favorites from the menubar.)

Anyway, if you like I can give you a detailed critique on your picture now or after the challenge is over. PM me with the link to your entry if you are interested.

Cheers!

I'm at 58%. I went back and reviewed the upper half this morning. Now to the lower half......I'm hoping to comment on most. Probably not all.

Hello All,

I'm new here to DPC. Long Exposure is my first challenge. I've read the comments on this thread and seem okay with high 5's and others seem disappointed about similar scores. I'm trying to watch, and learn and gauge how I'm doing ...

Hogwash... :-) You can't win if you don't play, and you can't play if you don't try!

This site is all about learning & having fun (at least it is for me!) - and like some of the other guys/gals have said, many of the best photographers on here have similar and lower scores in their portfolios. A lot of them continue to have low scores for particular challenges too. So don't get discouraged, get determined. Keep trying and it will get better. Try to learn as much as you can about what you did right and what you could have done better about your shot, then you'll start to think of those things while you're shooting.

I'd say you are doing extraordinarily well! Don't be afraid to sit out the next few challenges and let us other guys have a shot! LOL Really nice job - congrats.

It's a very good start. To have an idea what is a good score, look at people's Avg Vote Received stats. You'll see that even the best of the best (those who have figured out the site formula and consistently exploit it well) have average scores in the low 6's. Any image that approaches the 6 mark is very good in my book. Anything above 6 is very, very good and anything even approching or supassing 7 is superb.

Of course, this is just my point of view. Everyone has their own. In my case, anything over 6 is great and for me an Avg Vote Received of 6+ for myself is my target.
