I'm really interested in comments on the composition. I'm trying to work with the rule of thirds and I know I'm still missing the mark most of the time.
I know the color is off...JUST discovered that the monitor was miscalibrated.
Thanks,
Shari

Don't you just hate those "blond" moments. Of course, at least we have an excuse for the dumb things we do LOL. Anyway, I love that photograph. It is beautifully composed. Love the colors and they way you used the DOF to accentuate the two pink and yellow flowers. I don't know if you would have done real well in the complimentary colors for the simple reason that your "purple" is more pink than purple. It is a gorgeous shot though, really beautiful and you need to put it in DPCPrints.

When I'm having a blonde moment I refer to myself as Dolly Ghandi - or perhaps Indira Parton. Usually the first variation.
:-D
Shari I like the angle you have on the main flower there and the shallow DOF causing blur on the petals nearest the camera. I am not so keen on the red carnations peeping out at top left, I think that their intense colour takes away a little from the focus on the colours and form of the main flower.

Good photo - don't do stupid things again - it would have scored well... By the way, you purple is pink on my monitor too.

Lovely pink and white flower, but it's kind of grainy - a little sharpening, or a slightly higher-quality jpg might fix that. |

I need to see some examples of where sharpening reduces grain...

eloise - i see no graininess at all, and I've looked at this photograph on two different monitors. Perhaps something is amiss with your calibration? ;) |

shari - I think your composition is good, but I agree with the comment about the red flower at the top being a distraction. It appears to me to be just a little overexposed at the white tips of the flower, particularly the one that is directly to the left of the yellow center of the flower. Overall, it doesn't really move me as a shot that is anything extraordinary, but it is pleasant enough, with nice details. |

Hi Shari,
I really like the composition, it shows wonderful depth. It is conservatively sharpened; I don't think that's bad, but a little additional sharpening would probably play well with the voters. I don't see a problem with grain (noise). I agree that color correction would add something.
My major comment would be the DOF, I think you have the right amount of DOF, but I would like to see focus brought forward just a bit.
I tried a few things in PS, and one thing I really liked was a "soft focus" effect achieved by applying a gaussian blur of 7.5 px, then fading the blur by about 50% and finally readjusting brightness & contrast (using curves). |

Shari, I think the framing is just fine, as well as the colors. My complaint would be the dof and general focus. I see more GOOD photos ruined by modifications than anything else here. I am guilty myself.
You have a superb camera and a lot of talent. I suggest using a tripod and remote shutter release as much as possible, paying close attention to focus and dof and taking a lot of variances of lighting, f-stop and shutter speed so you can select the best of the shots. Try to do as little modifing as possible-----usually NONE is best for me. |

I'd really like to thank everyone who has commented on my photo. Your input is greatly appreciated and improvement taken to heart.
I'm having some trouble calibrating my monitor right now after the installation of a new video card which accounts for the weird difference between what I know was a purple flower and what came out as pink on the other end.
Any suggestions on monitor calibration would be appreciated...i'm kind of "eyeing" it right now...printing something and looking at the screen then adjusting until it comes out similar.
Shari
