OK, background to this piece… About 8 months ago my PC broke. Wasn’t starting and stuff. So I was looking after a friends ‘puter who was in China for a year. “So” I thought “I’ll use that PC for a week while I take my time and fix my own”.
She comes back next Tuesday and I had not even looked at my PC. Anyway, reset and restarted my PC, all working fine. Now I needed to transfer all my pictures from the borrowed PC to my nice clean one. I have a router for using my wireless laptop, so I thought I would just plug the borrowed PC into the router and transfer the files that way.
Plugged it all up and internet connection was instantly found so nearly there. Tried to set up a network for about 3 hours and I just couldn’t get it to work. Sometimes I could see the other PC and other times I couldn’t, but I could never transfer files or share the printer. I needed to move a few pics quickly, so rather than burn a disk I decided to send them over the interweb using MSN messenger. (This is where it gets interesting (ISH)). Sent the first file and I noticed that it transferred very quickly. Done a few tests and discovered that using a router MSN messenger acts as a peer to peer (P2P) network so I was getting the full 100mbs. Transferred all Music, images and files in no time at all. (About 80GB).
Story over. This may be of some interest to someone. I was impressed and just thought I would share. :)
