Could someone post a link to the original thread where these groups got started. It might help others to understand how spontaneous it was, how quickly it happened, how easy it was etc. It was more like a clap of thunder than a secret society.

What if there were a "followers" thread for the courses, where followers of the groups do the assignments, post them up and give each other feedback?

Could be like a pyrimad scheme where the students in one group become the mentors in the next group waiting to start in the same category.

These both sound like really good ideas, and I would totally be willing to teach after I have learned too :0) hey- what if I were to teach digital color say like a month behind and not after the whole thing? I mean I'd have to ask Nick cuz I'd basically be stealing his lesson plans! But I don't even know if anyone is in line for that group anyways. Maybe some other students from various groups would be willing to do the same?

I think the posting of the "soon to be opening" is a great step guys.

:)

Even if I don't make it into the group I'll feel like I at least had a good endeavoring to do so.

I totally missed out. I think there are a couple of ones that it would have been fun to participate in and while I can't think of anything right away, I think it would be a worthwhile experience to be a mentor. Had I known, I would have at least TRIED to play.

There is such a great demand here - two new groups were posted today and filled withing 12 hours. If you want in, you better not fall asleep.

If you're interested in being a mentor I say go for it. Mentors are in "high demand"....if you're wondering what to do it on...well I see you've got some great "soft" fotos (your Orange Lily, and the Pedal Faster motion blur.

Perhaps a great course idea would be "Soft focus & motion blur"

I bet you'll have 6-12 enrollees by the end of tomorrow.

You still can, you know. Alot of the mentors are over-burdoned. I'll bet many of them would welcome a helping hand. Try asking one of them if they'd like a co-mentor. I have one - stdavidson - and he's awesome. Actually, I think he's a better mentor than me ;-(

SUGGESTED REVISION

DPC Mentorship ΓΆ€“ Rules of the Road (make this a link to a thread with details, perhaps even locked)

Group: Title
Brief: A sentence or two summarizing the objectives and/or focus (expansion on title)
Mentor: Mentor w/link to profile
Students: students

More Info on DPC Mentorships

(Linkable - this would be a page listing all "Current, Past, and Future" Mentorships. Similar to aboutimage's profile page details. On top of providing a single reference point it would double as an archive for completed courses. This way they won't be forever lost. And if anyone want's to learn about "DOF" they can find click to the thread from this page.)

Aboutimage, I'd be willing to help manage these two pages...

Here's my opinion on the subject.

When I first saw the rules of the mentorship threads, I wasn't thrilled that someone is excluding people from responding in a public forum. Personally, I do not read the mentorship threads, but I do not mind that they are there. I could read them, but then I would want to post a response, so the safest thing is to ignore it.

I do think it would be good to give the mentorship its own category in the forum. I don't think "out and about" is really the best place for it unless the students are meeting up with the mentors to go shoot. Regardless, if the threads are helping people improve, then go with it.

I only found out about these groups yesterday and my first feelings were when did this happen and how come I didnt here about it........I did feel left out of the very thing I joind this site for partisipation and learning....It seems what was discused in threads has now become privat and to set rules within a group, that excludes individuals who also pay for this site...I do not feel is right.. Teaching is good learning even beter but now I get less out of the threads because many of the people who were in the threads talking and discusing are to busy with the groups.... Our loss.. My loss Good concept.. just caused a lot of bad feelings

Why not use Yahoo Groups to run these? Free, easy, effective and the mentor will have control of everything.
Probably much easier for the users as they won't have to search for the forum thread when it drops off the screen.

There is no "exclusion" under the current system--any group of members is free to start up a similar group.

Imagine we were all at a big DPC Convention. In addition to sitting quietly in assembly to hear the keynote speaker (yes, that's a joke!), it is highly likely that people milling about the exhibit floor would meet up, start discussing a common theme or problem or whatever, and go off somewhere to talks about it over a snack and beverage.

Other people in the cafeteria are likely to overhear and be interested in the discussion, and might even transfer the discussion at their own table, but I doubt any of them would demand the right to go sit in at the first group's table.

I think we have the exact online equivalent of this situation. If you didn't hapen to bump into a group when it formed, but are interested in the topic, just make an announcement that you'd like to see if there are more people in forming another group and get going.

These are spontaneous "meetings" and not "classes" sponsored by the site.

Just don't imply that it's an official DPC-sponsored group, and you can use whatever conferencing method your group agrees upon. You can all instant-message each other, use blogs (like the F. Patterson group), video conference via WebEx, observe/control one another's machines with Timbuktu, etc.

Because I believe it's a great resource and easily tied to DPC. Furthermore, DPC and the voting augments it greatly by providing both a small group feedback and a "global" feedback (via voting).

Secondly, it creates a rich "knowledge" base for DPC members. And a fair amount of interaction can happen behind the scenes via PM.

I have volenteered my time to share what I know about Macro photography. I set up the mentorship in that thread to be more like a class. I feel it would be the best method of me to share my knowlede. However due to a lack of spare time I limited the nmber of people I was willing to have active in the "class" at one time. There wil be assignments and project work. I will want to look these over and give indepth critiques and and openly discuss the photos and projects. If there were 300+ people in the same "class" at one time I would not have the time to work with each and every one. The odds a very good all you would get if anything is "nice job". I did however set a time frame for the lessons. After I have covered all of the material I have planed to cover I will set the "students" free. Following a short break and providing there are others interested I will grab a few new people an do it again. It's first come first served. There is no social Clique or anything of the sort. I am offering a lecture on my free time, I have decided that I will only allow X number of people to participate at one time. I was not asked nor openly endorced by DPC. You are however more than welcome to hang out in the forum and listen. I just find myself unable to effectivly work with more than a few people at once.

Sorry for the hard feeling if you didn't make the first lecture but there are likely to be many more to follow.
