I hate to bother everyone with the same shots but I have been playing with some of the Color to BW conversion tips I found here and now need some honest opinions and additional suggestions for improvements.
The 2 photos here represent an earlier try as well as my most recent attempt, using your suggestions. Thanks bunches!

I like the "Time" one better. Things stand out more, the sky looks better, and it is generally not as flat looking.

I think this scene would be better photographed under different natural lighting conditions. To me, both of them feel rather flat and they also feel a little overprocessed. It looks like what's happening here is that you are trying to fix something that didn't work out so great on the original shoot. I don't see any shadows in these photos, but I do see a clear to partly cloudy sky, which indicates that you may have shot these with the sun directly overhead. Time of day and weather conditions are rather important in shots like this one. Your best bet will be to use this as a learning experience and go shoot it when the sun is at different positions in the sky and find out which situation is going to work best. Shoot it in a heavy overcast condition also...
