These aren't the clearest pictures, but I wanted to see if someone knew what this was. We thought it might be a humming bird but....the tail kind of looks like one but the head looks more like a bug.

A type of moth that has fantastically fast wing motion. Not a hummer though...

Links here and here.

Spooky. Looks like a flying crayfish...

Winged crustaceans give me the creeps.

Thanks! All of the pictures look pretty close to it. My parents have a lot of hummingbirds in their yard, but we thought this one was something different.

It said, "Hummingbird hawk-moths are abundant in Mediterranean countries, Central Asia and Japan. In the British Isles they can be spotted every year in the summer from June to September and have been recorded as far north as the Orkney and Shetland Islands." What about the NC mountains? That's where it was.

I've got a bumper crop of them here. On Friday I saw about a half-dozen of them in one small area of the yard. Almost definitely a different, but closely related species to the link I posted. I believe there are a number of hawk-moth species, all of which have the characteristic body shape and hovering flight.

jejejeĆ¢„Ā¢ The insects, of course, are a member of the class "arthropods", of which shrimp, crayfish etc are members of a subclass, "crustaceans"; so they are strongly related structurally, and resemblance is to be expected anyway. Those little vanes spreading out like a shrimp's tale are really the weird part, ain't they?

Robt.

These heavenly shrimps are found in Taiwan and philippines. They are really nice to look at and they don't look like moths.
