What is everyone's thoughts on existentialism?
By definition, existentialism is a philosophy that emphasizes the uniqueness and isolation of the indivisual experience in a hostile or indifferent environment. It was expressed predominately in the 20th century centering on an individual's experience, stating that each individiual is ultimately responsible for their own acts of free will without knowledge of what is morally and ethically right or wrong.
I know this may sprout some religious intervention, which may move it to the rant section, but I am just curious if people agree or disagree with this or what your thoughts are on it.
Without taking a stand of agreeing or disagreeing I find it very intrigruing that everything you do consciously or subconsciously from the minute you are born shapes the person you are today and also has an affect on those around you. I, personally, see existentialism as a rippling effect that starts with one person making a decision which not only effects them but influences other people and thus, their decisions.
Any thoughts?

Read Victor Frankl's book, Man's Search for Meaning. I highly regard a lot of his ideology and am very appreciative of the fact that I got to learn a lot about him and his work during the pursuit of my Master's degree.
A favorite quote of his...
"There is also purpose in that life which is almost barren of both creation and enjoyment and which admits of but one possibility of high moral behavior: namely, in man's attitude to his existence, and existence restricted by external forces.... Without suffering and death human life cannot be complete."

Existentialism to me is seeing the world and our short lives in it for what it truly is when you strip it from any mystical meaning. It's the intellectual crowd that got tired of feeding on religion and science.
"Existence preceeds essense"
-Jean-Paul Sartre
There is no meaning of life. Nobody's up-there watching on us, controlling us, creating a balance or a direction by any intervention. Everyone is responsable for their acts and reckognises that each of their actions will influence events. And at all times.
"Even by not choosing, you are choosing"
-Jean-Paul Sartre
That what creates the world today. Everybody's decisions and act is what makes-up humanity. They essence is within human since there was no need nor reasons for us being around before we were. |
