I (along with about half of the other DSLR peeps) have the F/1.8 and it is a GREAT lens for the price. I've had half a dozen people say the price difference between the two makes the 1.8 more attractive. This topic has been discussed quite a bit:

I believe i'm the one that always has to do this but...
1. 1.4 is faster both by 1/3 stop and in focusing speed
2. 1.4 is better in build
3. 1.4 produces better bokeh
4. 1.8 is lighter and a great value.
the 1.4 is better, but it's up to you if it's worth the extra money. I have the 1.8, but when I bought it I was low on cash, and I think the 1.4 is better. However, I almost never use the 50mm range anymore, so I don't see it being worth the upgrade.

F1.4 is 2/3 stops faster than F1.8. Also it USM focusing (faster as mentioned, also allows for full-time manual and no risk of screwing something up by forcing the ring to move while in AF). I went for the F1.4 only a few months after buying the F1.8

whoops, yes you're correct 2/3 stops, as the next full stop is 2.0.
