I have a Canon 350D and wanting to buy either the 50mm f1.4 or f1.8. Since the 350D has 1.6 field of view crop, should i buy a 35mm lens (or there abouts)to compensate for the magnification? Just a thot.

A 50 is way to tele on a DX/APS-C body for a normal lens. A better option indeed would be a 35 f/2 or the Sigma DC 30 f/1.4 EX HSM (DX/APS-C bodies only). I have a 50 but it is not wide enough for everyday use.

Before you buy, ask yourself what you intend to do with the lens. A fast 50mm may be an excellent lens for a person who needs that range to shoot inside, etc, but it will not work well for a person looking to shoot landscapes, telephotoshot for sports/wildlife, etc.
My personal feeling is that a 18-50 or a 28-75ish range zoom will be more versatile as a single (meaning you only have one lens) lens setup.

I love the 50mm 1.8 but Azrifel is right about it not being wide enough for an all around lens at least for what I like to shoot but some people do swear by it.

the 50mm is not long enough in a lot of situations for me. It just depends on what you like to shoot! If you like indoor scenes and landscapes even 35mm is not going to be wide enough in a lot of cases. I would not argue that the 50mm is the best single lens either. the 200mm 1.8L takes that.

How is the 200mm f1.8 the "best"? The best for some specific types of shots, maybe. It's certainly not suited for macros or wide landscapes.
I don't think that any 1 lens is the "best".

It is the best lens optically of any canon produced or produces.

Most 500 f1.8 are their brands marker for sharpness.

I love my 500mm f1.8 for it. Excellent color and control of DOF. It can really isolate your subject.

But sometimes it can be less wide than in 35mm format. For example in shooting indoors you must keep more distance that probably you want for some kind of shoot. I had thins problem the other day, in my first wedding that I shoot. I was expecting to use it a lot inside church with no flash to capture the ambience (for this is excellent). But I found myself walking away from the subjetc in order to keep everything in the frame. For this reason a 24mm f2.8 is in my next buying list.

If you aer not swimming in money I suggest the f1.8 version. A best buy for the buck. It is not a big difference regarding to lightness and probably 1/2 the price of f1.4. In Nikon the f1.8 is sharper than the f1.4.

According to PhotoDo it's the best lens optically that anyone has produced.

I have the 10-22, 17-40, and the 70-200 2.8 IS. I love them all, but the 50 1.8 is still my fav.

PhotoDo don't have a grade listed for that, unfortuantely. :-(
