I just got a spare battery (non-Canon) for my Rebel from eBay and in looking at the info on the back, it's different from the Canon battery.
Canon: 7.4V, 1100mAh
Spare: 7.2V, 1400mAh
The new one says that it's "For Canon BP-511", but because the numbers aren't the same, I'm a bit wary of it. I don't know anything about batteries or electricity, so is it safe to use, even though it's different?

I use three 3rd party batteries in my 10D, one is 7.4V, 1400mAh and the other two are 7.4V 1300mAh, and they work fine...they even last a little longer than the Canon one. Yours should be perfectly safe. :)

there's no difference in use... I have 2x 1600mAh 7.4V batteries i got from ebay in my camera (with grip) and have no problems.

the higher the Mah the more power the battery stores, and the longer it lasts. 3rd party batteries tend to have higher numbers than canons.

I note that the voltages are different - 7.4 v. 7.2. I don't think it will make a difference, but not sure.

Careful with the different voltages. It might still work but it might shorten the life of the capacitors and transistors in the camera depending on how it deals with the power input, i don't really know. Not much of a difference so should be ok. It's only a rebel anyway :P

Thanks all! Too afraid to risk any damage to my precious new Rebel, so I think I'll only use it in emergencies and get a real Canon for backup. It was only $10, so no real loss...

The mAh figures are milliamp-hours, which dictate how long the batteries will last. The spare lasting longer will not affect the camera.

The voltage is a factor in how much power the battery can deliver. I would guess a disparity of 0.2V would not cause dramatic difference in the power delivery.
