Thinking about selling my Canon 75-300mm USM IS lens to buy a Canon SD400 point and shoot camera since I started a photo-a-day project and would like to have something to carry around with me when its not convenient to bring my Rebel XT.
Any opinions on this?

I think you would be sorry in the long run.
Maybe an inexpensive P & S to just carry around, but keep the Rebel?

I adore my 75-300 IS USM lens...I would rather cut off my arm than sell it.

I think you misunderstood. Not selling the Rebel, just one of the lenses. I dont use the telephoto lens that often anyway.

I sure did, my apologies.

Man, that would be a drastic move. I have the SD300 for similar reasons and it takes decect shots. Why not save up a little and look for it? I think you can pick one up for under $300.

Make me an offer for my Coolpix 5700, a small, light prosumer with 10x optical zoom and 5.0 Mp, uses same memory cards as the rebel...

I wouldn't unload a zoom lens unless you really think you'll never need it. You surely can keep your rebel in your car and maybe pull over when you see something worth taking a picture of, right? I know what you mean - I want a compact as well.. but I wouldn't sacrifice flexibility on the dSLR end in order to get a compact. Of course, perhaps I use my zoom far more often than you. If you sell it, you'll be losing money on the lens and then eventually probably buying another zoom anyways. I would just save some extra cash on the side for the compact.
