one last though then I am going to bed. Is photography a sport? It is certainly more active than ohhh lets say poker - but is it a sport? and if we were to video photographers and put them on ESPN taking photos of "stuff" would it then be a sport? Hummmmm. |

And if ya do fall in, being able to swim with 50lbs of flyfishing flies, leader, extra spools, split shot, raingear, lunch, etc. in your fishing vest, and chest waders that just filled up with water is a sporting challenge. Well beyond your idea of fishing as sitting on a bank drinking beer watching a bobber going under, pulling the fish in, and rebaiting the hook with a worm and popping another beer. I think the term sportsmen came from hunting and fishing to my knowledge. |
Quite true!!! Ever hooked a big salmon? And for the record: I'm in a fishing competition every three weeks and I can tell you it's hard work to get to the top. Tonight I'm fishing from 6.30pm till 10.30pm and when I'm able to catch some big ones, my arms hurt at the end of the evening. YES, fishing IS definitly a competetive sport!!!!

It's got nothing to do with TV or spectators virtually all sports were developed by the participents, usually classed as hobbies or pastimes until competitions and events are developed, and some of the popular ones made it big on TV radio etc and as the TV channels battle for your attention more and more sports are promoted via this medium.
Just to put another slant on it in Britain radio control car Racing is officially a sport affliated to the Motor Sport association and recognised by the sports council and even subject to the same anti doping regulations, and basically you stand on a platform twiddling your thumbs with your car 10-40yds away, but then we also have 7 or 8 national championships, European championships, World championships, there are manufacturer works teams, sponsored drivers and some professional drivers (mainly in america), yet I still often refer to it as toy car racing.
So ease up chill out be open minded. |

Sure. And running is a way to avoid being food. =p |
Good One KaDi!
Personally I hate these debates about what is what, as if someone didn't follow the rules, based on somone else's defination of a word, so I'm not going to get into this one, but I did enjoy your 'avoid being food'.....hmmmmmm....is that considered a sport?

But that's not the question at hand; I think there's little disagreement about what type of photo would score better. |
silly me, i asked the wrong question ;-) i should have asked "which one captures sport action?" and, based on the challenge entries, i would say both...
i just wish that all the people who stretched their definition of 'sports action' would also give the same courtesy while voting, as opposed to voting so rough :( |

Ever since they started showing it on ESPN?
Seriously...Don't be such a narrow-minded person. For some, if it doesn't involve a ball, they don't consider it a sport. |

If i'm not mistaken, either the fish wins or the fisherman wins?

How does my signature have anything to do with being narrow-minded? The signature means that, while it's understood it is really about the light, without shadows, the light would be borring.

What Deapee said: his signature is sort of a 'koan", an expression of the awareness that although we need light to make pictures (of course), what makes a picture great is the placement of the shadows; in other words, to use light effectively you orchestrate the way the shadows harmonize with the light. No shadows = flat light = weak photography.

No matter what anybody says...I don't consider Figure Skating to be a sport. Fishing either.
Casting into a target would be however.

Isn't darts being considered for the Olympics? |
Why should Darts be considered when Softball is being taken away from the olympics? |

pawdrix, ya have to consider flyfishing at least as a sport. We cast to a target every cast. Ya have to get the fly to a spot where the fish can see it in running water, usually upstream of the fish (fish face up current), so there is an target you cast to. So its a sport. Now we've settled that one. :)

I'd love to go fly fishing sometime but do I consider outsmarting little fishies a sport? NO! It might require some skill sets but then again so does typing. Cooking could be a sport too if you think about it.
Imagine an Olympic event that involved typing? Whoever could type a paragraph the fastest ....wins. I mean, there's speed, accuracy, eye hand coordination. Why not making Speed Typing an Olympic sport?
BTW I'm just having a little fun playing devils advocate. I have no dog in this fight. Oh and if I'm ever in Colorado...would you take me out Fly Fishing? Been wanting to go ever since I saw, A River Runs Through It.

Don't ask me, ask the Olympic committee. They're also considering roller sports. Olympic Roller Derby should be interesting.

How about if you use the criteria that if you can purchase equipment for it at a sporting goods store, it counts as a sport? (That's what I did)

pawdrix,
Come on up. We'll get ya casting like a river run through-it boy in an hour or so. We can do the Arkansas, Rio Grande or something in between. I got spoiled, fished over 100 days in Yellowstone Country, here the water is much smaller, fish too. Me just having fun too. |

Only if they go back to the high-banked tracks ... should provide a nice alternative for those unemployed hockey players : ) |

While I dont personally view fishing as a sport, I can see how someone would think it would qualify. Ever heard of sport fishing? (vs. commercial fishing) |
