I've decided to retire from mentoring this thread. I've been finding it difficult to make time for it, and the time I do dedicate to it I feel is wasted as nobody is carrying out my assignments except for Anni, my best student!
I'm also fed up with trying to keep order to the group... there is quite a waiting list and I wanted to make sure that I gave the inactive members a chance to show they wanted to stay in the group before people jumped the queue.
Perhaps you can setup a thread where you just critique each other's gig photos without any assignments. Anybody will be able to join this group. This can be interesting, but ultimately you won't really progress as fast, and you'll certainly be waiting longer for your big-name press passes.
Maybe Terje will take over and give this thread some momentum?
Thanks for helping me to really think about how I carry out my gig photography, it's really helped.
All the best,
Bob

Hi Bob,
Even though I'm not a member of this group I've been following it avidly, learning so much from what you have written. The advice you've given is invaluable.

I remembered a lot of what you said when I was taking a few photos at a winter festival here. Most especially not cropping the hands, looking for a different angle. Took this last wkend at a winter festival.

Thankyou Bob, I hope you continue to mentor/co-mentor this group. We've/I've got so much to learn.
sue

ps.....apologies for posting to a thread where I'm not a member of the group, but I wanted to say thanks.

Sorry for not posting in a while, I've been busy shooting and travelling.. I was really hoping for as many of you as possible to actively go out and carry out the assigment. No matter where you stand, you will learn by trying, and I think that is one of Bob's core goals, to get you out there trying, and to get some feedback on the techniques, what works and not etc..

I hope BobsterLobster continue mentoring this group, and I will hopefully have more time to follow up.

We just had a Live Concert Challenge, and I was happy to see so many of you enter. I don't agree at all with the restults of this challenge, but I did somehow expect it's outcome.. At least we all got a chance to get out and shoot concerts, and even enter our shots in a challenge.

We should continue with the current assigments, and show boblobster that we care about this group. Please go out and continue to shoot venues, and show us the results.

Would be a shame to see Boblobsters great initiative go to waste, he has put it a lot of effort in this group.. Please follow up on the assigments!

Hi, I've amended the first post to remove the list of members. It's all up to you now!
As a farewell, I'll post my outtakes...

Edit... BTW I'm off this weekend to a music festival in Cumbria called Solfest, very near your neck of the woods, Anni! You should be going, it's pretty child friendly from what I gather. Very good bands. Good festival shots are a great ticket into this business.

Terje fabulous shots, everyone take note of how he shows the atmosphere of the event by including the audience wherever possible. This makes the shots far more sellable.

By the way. I have been looking into flash guns. There are only 2 that will TTL with my D70. I really can't afford either one of these. There are a few that are a lot cheaper...around 30 and 40 quid. Since I have never really used even the onboard flash, I really have no idea what I am looking for in a flashgun...can anyone help. Would love to take some bob's challenge entry inspired bounced flashed gig photos.

I am jealous that terje got to go on stage :P..

Saj you gig photography is really progressing quite nicely. I love skillit guitarist. The guitarist would be awesome if not for the scafolding and if you wouldn't have chopped off his left foot. guitarist1 is nice and simple, but not too much happening, not really feeling this one. Tecnically (i will ask you all to excuse my spelling from here on out) it is a good photo, but it just lacks that extra something to make it special and stand out from other peoples photos. I have a problem with this as well. All of bob's and terje's photos have this amazing feel to them and I really don't know how to get that. I mean I took over 400 photos at my festivl and didn't get anywhere near a special moment like they have. guess it comes from experience.

Bob some of your photos would have looked bad ass with some fisheye distortion. not that they don't look badass already.

Terje, I am not sure if anyone else would agree, but I would love for you to take over for bob. I really don't want to loose momentum! I have been fired up about this from the start.

What do you think guys?

Hey Anni....what's a flash gun??????

Thanks for the feedback as well...

Yeah, "skillet guitarist" was a quick shot, didn't have the time to frame it perfectly.

The other guitarist is more to capture the individual (it's a friend's band) and will likely go on the profile page. It captured his tone/temperment well.

Also, I would not be opposed to Terje coming on board as a moderator. I do hope BL will stay around and pop in from time to time.

:)

saj..flash gun is a flash that fits into the hot shoe of your camera. You can tilt it at any angle to bounce off walls and celing. It could also be handheld, but you have to get a special cable to do it. Common you know what I am talking about!

I hope bob pops round from time to time as well.

That sounds like you're just referring to an external flash?

I thought it was some sort of super-high powered flash that illuminated objects far away (like a focused beem) so that even with a 600mm a hundred feet from the a stage you could still illuminate the subject.

*hee hee*

sorry I have been inactive for a while. I have preengaged with my family in the new orleans area.

I hope they're all okay, my heart really goes to all of those involved. I can't imagine what they're going through.

You don't need an expensive flash. As I've explained, I use a basic flash (Sunpak 383 which I got from EBay) which I hold in my left hand and direct at walls and ceilings connected with a PC sync cord. IMO, a TTL fancy flash won't really help with gig photography as I wouldn't use direct flash anyway.

you still need to watch copping off hands, arms and elbows shadowin 2 would be an awesome if his full arm in the pic. I am not sure about the strange effect with the girl, it;s really cool but I can't make my mind up if I like it. 506 9 is a great great shot! I'd put that one in your portfolio, exposure is just right, and the composition is good. thegroing is a fantastic pic as well Your composition is spot on with this one if anything maybe slightly overexposed. the last one is okay but agin would have been much stronger if her whole arm was inI would also crop just above the green light. There is an awful lot going on in the backround here.
You have done really well and I can tell you are progressing keep it up!

nice capture of the stage lighting colours. Agree with Anni for the comments. Personally, i feel a slightly tighter crop around the lights would emphasize the capture of the light gel in the back, which would add to the energy of the photo in 506a_3 and 8. Little to much empty space above them for me. Haven't followed this mentorship to much, but just an idea.

Thanks Pidge!!!

Yeah, part of the problem (and seen more on the 506 shots) is the crop. I'm usually using my 50mm f/1.8 at the venue they commonly play at. (As my 70-200mm f/2.8 is too tight a crop and my 12-24mm f/4 is not as attuned to the low lighting.)

It's a very small venue and cramped (with tons of kids behind me) and a lot of times I can't back up and it's a fixed "prime" lens.

Alas, I hope to see this issue disappear when I get a f/2.8 wide-tele zoom.

Of course, there are some exceptions. The last 506 I could have dropped lower and caught a better angle. If I recall there was something in the way there in the foreground and I was trying to avoid it. Also, sometimes I have better crops but the lighting changes (stage lights changing colors) blew the shot or it had too much motion and was out of focus.

But trying to learn and hone my skills each shoot.

:)

I understand. I've shot theatre, and the worst was when there'd be an unexpected blackout. At least (I'd assume) with a gig you won't have that problem since you know when the song ends... And yes, I think a lot of your problems may be sovled with a wide - tele zoom 2.8 since it sounds like you have limited to mobility. Good luck
