Well ive been trying to take some night time flash shots but i cant figure out for the life of me how, if you can at all, sync your flash so it fires at the end of the exposure instead of the beginning. I have the 350 and 420ex thanks for any knowlage.

One of the custom functions of the 350 is 1st/2nd curtain synch., so it can be set in the camera.

Should be doing in on the flash for the 420 I believe. I think the in camera flash sync is for the popup flash or for a manual flash only.

how do you do it on the 420?

The 420 EX has no onboard provision for 2nd curtain sync, it is controlled by the camera.

Dunno abt the 350XT, but with the 10D, you set the 1st/2nd curtain sync in the custom functions.

The 420ex DOES have onboard rear curtain sync capability...

yeah... I couldn't imagine that it wouldn't! I don't know what it looks like on the canon flash but on mine there is a switch with little triangles that point to the right (two pairs of them). The left one has a filled in on the left side, and on the right side the right one is filled in. The left on mine is first curtain, and the other is obviously 2nd. I don't know if that's helpful, but I hope so :-)

It does have the capability, but it depends on the camera to tell it to use 2nd curtain. The russian hack says it offers the 2nd curtain, but from the tests I've done, it still fires on the first curtain even when the 2nd curtain function is enabled.

Sounds odd... it worked on my 10d without setting the custom function and just setting it on the flash.

The 420EX does not have any way to set itself to second curtain sync. You may be thinking of the high-speed sync, which can be set with a switch on the 420. It does have second curtain capabilities, but they must be set via the camera.

The 550EX does have the on-flash second curtain sync capability via pushing the "+" and "-" buttons sumultaneously.

I thought you had the 550EX?

The 420EX has no such capability, it depends on the camera to tell it which curtain to sync with.
