Did I get a defective camera?
My battery is on the first charge still, so maybe something happens when you insert that...
I installed the lens, and looking through the viewfinder, everything is SUPER dark and blotchy. Except for a line at the very top and very bottom that looks normal. I cannot find any protective film anywhere that I'm supposed to be taking off or anything. Is there something on a mirror or something or something in the eyepiece?
Seriously, the one in the store wasn't like this at all.
Thanks.

Don't think it's stuck. Something is seriously wrong though, it's way too dark. and it's like blotchy.

Yeah...it's like dark, but on the bottom edge, especially, I can see light coming in like the way it should look. Maybe something moves or something when the battery is installed...should I try real quick even though it's not charged, do you think?

Sounds like the mirror is stuck possibly. When you insert the battery and turn it on, everything may pop back into place

Understandable worry. I'm finally making the leap and dropping the cash to get one this weekend and I can't wait! Glad it worked out.
What happened with the Rebel dave?

Gonna sell it. This d70 feels so good in my hands. Like it was built just for me. Incredible. You'll love it. There's always so much information to sink in with a new camera (especially a Nikon when you're used to Canon). I'm not even opening my sb-600 for a while at least.

I agree 110% about the feel. I work at Wolf Camera on summers and I always recomend the D70 over the canon based on the feel and build alone. It will be nice to have a story of someone selling the rebel to get the d70, especially since I make 25 dollars off the D70 and zilch on the canon ;) Looking forward to sharing pics. |

Just updated the firmware to version 2.0. I like the way the new menus look better lol. Everything went down without a problem.

Its refreshing to see that the sales help is objective in their reccomendations. Caveat Emptor |

People know what they want before they go there. No one is going to go for a d70 and get a rebel, and vice versa...and if you do, then you didn't do your homework first.

Dave,
I would agree with you at the upper end. The lower end of the SLR market however contains lots of non expert buyers. Many of them who go into a store instead of buying on line are truely looking for guidance and an objective presentation of pros and cons of different models |

Why would anyone ask a salesman what camera they should buy? That seems pointless. It's a question only you can answer. People should do their homework and see what's right for them. Heck, if I did more homework from the get-go, I would have saved about $1100.

if you don't know anything... it can be very helpful.

Only if the advice you are getting is objective... Clearly according to Trnqlty, at Wolf it's not |

The thought of someone going to a store with $1000 or more to spend on a camera and having no idea what he/she might be purchasing with it is frightening at best. I guess a lot of people out there have more dollars than sense, as my daddy used to say! ;)

I bought my camera a Wolf-Ritz, and they were very objective. Pros and cons of both. Very informative and helpful salespeople.
So , I don't know if every store is as objective, but mine was.

Clearly, one statement is not enough to know a whole sales pitch. I'm happy to go through each camera and explain the pros and cons of each. Pretty much every company has a competing camera that can fit a customers needs. I put each camera in the customer's hands and I consider one of the most important factors how it feels in one's hands. But, believe it or not dave, people will ask me to tell them which camera to buy(I sold a camera today in this type of situation). Both cameras the customer was looking at gave him what he needed, so if he asks, why not push the one that gives the salesman a cut as well. I spend lots of time going over camera's with customers. I won't sell a camera to a customer if it dosen't fit all of his/her needs.

The only photo store around here worth going to is really great for information. The guys in there are/were pro photogs. I think I'm gonna go down there and test out the 70-200 2.8 vs my drainpipe. Wanna see if the USM is all it's cracked up to be on the 1D :-) You can't do on hands testing on the internet, can ya?
