I haven't entered a challenge is so long, maybe I was just being too timid by not entering either of these images or maybe I was doing everyone a favor by not entering. Could I get some feedback on how these might have done had I entered the challenge?
Thanks!

I like the old rusty milk can. It seems to just be floating in a field of white. Or maybe you did that for punch? The detail of the can is good. Not crazy about the miniature covered wagon. I'd have rather seen a picture of the real thing. |

I too was going to do a milk can, I passed a farm that had equipment for sale and had two large milk cans on one of the wagons, wish I had stopped. Maybe my current submission will do well...not looking that way right now though. :(

Thanks Judy for the comments. My white background wasn't perfect so I had to adjust levels to make it better - hence the floating effect - which is what I was after in some way.
Oh well - I'll just post these up to a stock site. :-)
Good luck on the challenge Scott - hopefully the scoring will turn for you... |

both seem like stock photos - no context to either of them. No context, no emotion...no ribbon.

Chris, thank you for the comments. What could you suggest for re-shooting these objects to make the photo better? Different composition, lighting, background, add something?? I think these objects are difficult to add 'emotion' too, but maybe I've taken too much time off and I'm not as open minded as I should be.
Note: I do agree that they are missing 'something'... I'm just not sure what or how I could have done this differently - hence the reason I didn't enter the obsolete challenge. :-) |

Tina, they're both technically good shots, but I think that perhaps the backgrounds for both are what make them less appealing...perhaps the milk can on an old wooden porch or something, and maybe the wagon on the desert floor to give it some context/environment...something along those lines might make them more emotive...kind of harkening back to yesteryear.
I traveled a long way to get the shot I entered, and it's not doing nearly what I hoped it would do but it's at least not tanking desperately. Here are my outtakes, and I kind of think the first one should have been my entry after all. Oh well... maybe next time!!! :)

Hi Tina,
Both of your shots seem as mentioned, very stock-oriented.
Sometimes these work, sometimes not. Both however and decent shots, but think they would have ended up not doing a lot for the voters and would have been in the middle of the pack somewhere.
I posted mine in the Public Random Photo Thread. |

Laurie,
Thank you very much for the feedback and comments.
Your shots are fantastic! I think the second and third ones appeal more to meeting the challenge and it would be tough for me to choose between those if I had to pick. I would have rated either of those very high. I think you have something good going there!
I hope the scoring on your entry picks up!!
Thank you also Brad - your feedback is very much appreciated. I have actually submitted them to a stock site so my efforts wouldn't be all for not... :-) |
