I think I saw someone post a description of "leading lines" on one of these threads a while back, and it said that your photo needs to show a line that leads your eye through the picture, and your subject can be anywhere along the line. And if I'm remembering correctly, it actually said that it is often at the start of the line. I think as far as technicality is concerned, that picture would have fit the challenge fine. |
Very true when looking at only the challenge description though it seems from other threads that a subject at the 'end' of the line will be expected. Where the 'end' is will be determined by the viewer. Only a few more hours to see what the voters think.

Geez - I hope not. There could be a high number of disappointed people if that's the case. I don't proclaim to be anywhere near an expert on this subject...I just found it interesting to study when the challenge came up, and I noticed that MANY examples, if not the majority, showed leading line examples with the subject somewhere midpoint. Yes, there were examples for the other extremes (start, end of line) - but not nearly as many.

Been away for 4 days, and had to look thru some 500 shots to find ones that i could submit...so these are some of the top ones that did not make the cut. (and why I cut them). I hope I chose well the one I did submit...
The worst of the culls. Sky is blown and I don;t like the color of white buildings.
The people make it too cluttered.
Again, sky issues. Almost blown...I like this one. hard not to choose it.
This was my wife's favorite, my second. I kicked it for two reasons - the lines lead to no actual subject (alhtough technically the challenge description is met (lines leading to impact of photo). The second reason is the highlights on the metal are blown out, and DPC voters would kill me for that sin.
One hour till the voting begins...now that i have posted my out takes, I have no way to change my mind!

Having just voted on fantasy, and after some 10 challenges since joining, I have come to accept that a lot of people simply ignore the challenge theme and what it asks for. They simply shoehorn what they want in. Now I don't have an issue with that/ I do have an issue with voters voting them higher than those that took the time to meet the challenge. But things will never change, so if you can't beat em, join em. |

But the lines do not lead the viewer thru the pic...I had one with my daughter in the pic, but her back was turned. Ahh, never work with kids or animals they say. 20 month olds are both LOL

As the challenge is about to close, it's worth noting that a "leading line" doesn't have to lead you IN; it can lead you OUT, or DEEPER, or AROUND, whatever. There seems to be a sense here that a "good" leading line is like an arrow pointed at the heart of your subject, and that's just one way of using them. I'm personally more captivated by leading lines that lead me away from a subject and into its surround...

I posted this as an outtake last week. It's absolutely nothing like my entry but I think it would have done better now after quickly looking at some of the images that are in the challenge.
How might you have rated this...if you don't mind me asking? |

Here are my outtakes (that I probably should have used based on my current entry's score).
