I think it kinda sucks that with my Sony Mavica I cannot enter any challenges. I pretty paid the fee so I could enter the challenges and stuff. This really bites. You can get the date and time from my pics, it just doesn't give exposure info. There has got to be only so many that camera can have.

any camera worth its money will provide exif info, even my old canon s50 did.

surely if you were spending money out for a decent cam, full exif info is something you'd want?

as a photographer i cant even begin to imagine living without it!

Well, when I bought this camera it was may 8-10 years ago, I didn't know anything about them. It was the best for it's time. And I guess what I know or don't know about exif info is irrelevent, apparently the sony mavic does not have it.

Its really only an issue if your in the top 3 for the challenges, or your pic looks like it has exceeded the editing rules.

With 0.3 megapixels that camera will hinder you creatively in a short time. You can pick up relatively cheap cameras (new or second hand) with Exif data and alot more options than the Sony Mavica. I'm sure the members would help you choose a good camera model.

A bonus with more megapixels- you get lovely prints if you bring your pics to the photolab or upload large pics here and use DPC Prints.

You seem to have a creative eye so I think you'd really enjoy the challenges.

(Eds. for spelling, yikes!)

Looking at the page for the camera model you list, there are plenty of pictures there that were entered into challenges. How do they have the exif data and you don't? Same camera.

Sony Mavika DPC Entries

Looks like they sidestepped the need for exif. Looking at some of the dates maybe they were entered when rules were different.

As I remember it -- DPC didn't used to require EXIF. The requirement was phased in fairly recently (in the last year) as such a huge number now do support EXIF and older cameras are a lot less prevalent.

EXIF thread

This may help explain the situation & there are links to EXIF info downloads as well

When you submit to a challenge, you check a box that says the exif data is available and that you will provide it on request. I think we should be encouraging our members to follow the rules.
06/23/2005 07:30:00 AM · #11
Well, when I try to submit the pic, it won't let me submit it, cause it falls under those new rules. So, apparently no way out of it.

Buy a new camera. You can get a Canon Powershot S1Is for arounbd $300 now. Also I am sure there are more out there cheaper. Got my kids a Kodak DX3500 on ebay for $60

Not wishing to enquire about your finances or anything that personal but... is there any chance you could upgrade to a new camera?

Not just because of EXIF but for higher resolution and a bit more control too.

Doesn't need to be expensive or hugely complex but... things have moved on SO much in 10 years in the field of digital photography that this will probably benefit your results enormously.
06/23/2005 07:51:32 AM · #14
Unfortunatley, my finances are not, so that I can run out and buy a 300 dollar cam let alone a 60 dollar one. Oh well enough said, maybe I'll just have to borrow my sisters cam, or ask for the fee back and just be a basic non challenging member. I will atleast I guess put the pic in my portfolio. Not that it is the greatest.

Yeah, I guess so.

sorry to hear about the trouble, but it would not be fair for us to allow you to compete without having the ability to validate when your shot was taken. the only way that we can do that explicitly is to use the EXIF data that is captured with the image.

your membership does give you a number of other benefits besides challenges: you can have a portfolio and can sell images on DPCPrints. maybe you could use those to your benefit so that you don't feel that you "wasted" your money?
06/23/2005 08:47:30 AM · #18
It has the info to tell you the date and time the shots were taken it just lacks the rest of it. I thought that all they would need for validation would be date and time which I CAN provide. I did download an PIE extracting prog, but there is no aperature or ISO with my cam. It has a fixed lense

Kelly,

You may want to consider donating the Mavica to a school or PTA/PTO for a tax deduction. I work in Elementary schools and we use them extensively, even when they are that old they still meet our needs for the kids and class projects. At least you will get some value from it and purchase a new camera (they are so inexpensive now).

Dont get discouraged, lets see some pictures!

I think you have some shots there. I like the bridge a lot. I little more resolution and you would be rockin'

Hi Kelly, Sorry to hear about your troubles. I can see how that would be a huge let down, not to be able to enter challenges. But I started out here with a Mavica FD-83 and used it for a couple of challenges but that was before I knew what EXIF info was and before they set the new EXIF rules. I upgraded only because I found the camera limiting to what I wanted to achieve with my photography (and my husband was nice enough to get me a cool christmas gift that year) But back in the day, those cameras were the bomb and NOT cheap. Sometimes, all this technology can be a pain in the butt!!! :-) But just because you can't enter challenges, doesn't mean you can't enjoy your camera and photography. And it doesn't mean you can't share your visions with us. Please continue to post in your portfolio. There are plenty of people around here that love to leave helpful comments. :-) And in the meantime, if you feel it's worth it, save your change and upgrade when you can. We're not going anywhere anytime soon. :-D

I believe the "fee" she's referring to is a membership fee. It sounds like she purchased the camera several years back...not just to do challenges.
