Warbirds Over Hickory is an annual event in our area where we get to see a variety of military aircraft, vintage and current, on display along with some flight demonstrations.
I set out yesterday morning with my father for a day at the show hoping to get some good photos of some of these planes. Making photos is difficult due to the number of people on hand...
Photos from the show...

Hi John,
Great shots of the vintage aircraft. Thanks for sharing them. I love these old birds and especially, the Corsairs, P-38s, and Mustangs. So, you really must have had a great time at this show. I am truly jealous. I have about 3,000 aviation photos in my library, so I am a serious junky. Next year, I will plan to find your show in advance so that I can attend too.
Here in Ontario, we have an organization called the Canadian Warplane Heritage. They have an Avro Lancaster as well as many other airworthy and static display aircraft, including Hawker Hurricane, B-25 Mitchell, Supermarine Spitfire, Boeing Stearman, De Havilland Tiger Moth, and the North American Harvard IV, named after the university, which was produced as an export version of the AT-6 Texan advanced trainer, and many more.
They operate this facility as a museum and often can be seen demonstrating vintage aircraft at air shows, such as the Canadian National Exhibition air show held over the Labour Day weekend here in Toronto. What is really neat about these folks is that they make it fun and interactive. You can even take a ride in a bi-plane or a WWII trainer. You can sit in a jet fighter, it is wonderful.
Here is the web site - Warplane.com Check it out.
By the way, it is hard for me to think of the F-14 fighter as a vintage aircraft. But, it has been in service in various forms since it first flight, which I think was in 1970. That makes it 33 years old, which is like dog years, so it is very old indeed. But, it is so pretty it is still hard to place it with the older models no longer in active service.
Cheers, Michael

This show is not only vintage aircraft... we had the F14, and F18, a Harrier, and an E2 Hawkeye as well. The show wasn't quite as big this year as it has been in the past. Maybe next year will be better :)

Shaw AFB in SC also has a nice show every other October. Also, the one is Dayton, Ohio in July is also awesome (though a wee bit warm!) |

My wife absolutely loves the Harrier jump jet. I conjecture that she would do just about anything, no matter what it takes, simply to get a ride in one! It may have something to do with the 1994 Arnold Schwarzenegger / Jamie Lee Curtis film, "True Lies"? I am not too sure? Whenever I recollect that film, I daydream visions of Jamie Lee Curtis performing her sexy dance scene in the bedroom, definitely not the Harrier! Oh well, to each his own (or her own, as the case may be).

Those are some really fantastic photos, considering the crowds you probably had to fight off to get them I would say they are outstanding on that fact alone.
I had some family here today and I went to show them some of the photos you have in your profile and portfolio and found them before reading this thread. My brother-in-law and husband actaully found something to talk about today simply cause after seeing the warbirds they got into a long conversation on WWII. |

Great shots, John. I love vintage aircraft, too. Morgan listed pretty much my favorites, but I would add the Flying Fortress to those. I love WWI aircraft as well. To me, aircraft starts getting boring in the 60s. But now this really advanced stuff is getting more interesting.
I am lucky enough to have an Air Force Museum near us at the Hill Air Force Base in Ogden, Utah. They have all kinds of stuff there, including an SR-71 Blackbird, that has the world's record for speed. The museum is even free! I went there and have some outtakes from the Transportation challenge:

These are really fun aircraft!

My last post reminds me--I don't know the names of some of these aircraft; if you happen to look and know the names, I'd be much obliged.
