I don't believe it is if it creates or moves major elements. SC will have to determine that one.

Not legal in any challenge (open or member) since you are moving pixels around with this technique. Here is an example of an image that was disqualified. Pretty sure he used Liquify filter. Awesome, but still not allowed.

how are you supposed to know which filters you can use?

It's not as much about knowing which filters you can/can't use as much as knowing when you are using one to create a major element or major impact in your photograph.

I was DQ'd for using the motion blur to distort my background in the dream challenge . ...so I would think that the liquify tool is also a no-no..too bad one of the powers that be didn't adjust the rules for this challenge..would have been probably a lot more interesting : )

The rules are:
Cloning, dodging, burning, etc. to improve your photo or remove imperfections or minor distracting elements, etc. is acceptable. However, using any editing tools to duplicate, create, or move major elements of your photograph is not permitted.
So to decide, are you using a tool, or does your filter apply to select parts of the image, to do more than "remove imperfections or minor distracting elements" or does it have the effect of "duplicat[ing], creat[ing], or mov[ing] major elements of your photograph"?

As Setzler and the good Beagle have noted, in Advanced Editing it's not so much what you use as how you use it. Most tools in Advanced are legal, but can be used illegally. My understanding is that filters are allowed, but you can't use them to the extent that they create new objects or make/obscure major elements. Because the extent of filter use is often a subjective call, opinions will vary (even among the SC members), so DQs typically come down to a majority vote. Editing is supposed to be for touching up flaws and making minor tweaks to bring out the full potential of your original capture, and if you keep that in mind, you'll generally be OK. |
