Has anyone here taken the courses at New York Institute of Photography? I'm trying to figure out how worth it it would be to sign up and take their courses. I am just wondering how their classes are, if finishing and being a graduate has any push on getting into the photography market. Any info about them would be of great help.

Good question, I would like to know the same.
Although I was told by an established photographer that you are better off buying a couple of Ansel Adams books.
I have been hounded by those flyers for over a year now.

I do know that if you sign up for info on the courses, and then wait a few months, they start offering you large discounts on the courses. I think the best offer I got was $400 off the initial price...

I have been getting their newsletter via email for quite a while now (over a year), and keep contemplating it. But Gordon says the on-line courses at betterphoto.com (?) are quite good.. so I will consider those.

I've taken the NYIP course and I found it to be worth it. Good, in depth texts, good audio and video tapes, and it's very helpful to send in your assignments and receive them back with an audio tape from an instructor that critiques your work. If you're just starting out, that's a very helpful thing. I'd encourage anyone to take the course.

I enjoyed the one I did a lot and got a lot from it too. Kiwiness is doing one just now...

is there any extra benefit from being a graduate from either of these two places other than just knowing how to shoot better? I'm wondering if it has any prestige or anything in getting a photography job?

Jeremy,
I took the course 8 years ago, don't know if it has changed a lot since then, but honestley, I learned more in one $30 college course then I did with the $900 NYI course. It could just be me and the way I learn. To me it was a waste of money, I did end up passing ,but they never sent me a diploma even with hounding. I personally do not feel that having the diploma is an extra benefit or prestige, if I did I would have hounded them more for one :)

I just got the info in the mail about their classes. The thing that intrigues me the most about NYIP is the press pass. That would be a fun little item to have.

I'm enrolled with NYIP right now as well as a series of classes at Penn State. Comparing the two, NYIP is a great second to what I am getting through PSU. It is very complete and very precise, it seems to help me more as a study aid but the local class is better than the correspondant course.

You can make your own pass. The one I received was a plastic sheath with a cord around it with a page to cutout the NYI logo. You can make one on your computer, something like "DPChallenge Press Pass"or"Jeremy's Press pass",print it out and buy a plastic sheath at the store,(plus a little attitude) voila, you have a press pass that is as impressive and legitamate as the NYI one.
You are just as likely able to get into an event with a home made press pass as you are with a NYI one.

Hey, that's an idea. I think the members of the Dpchallenge site should have a tutorial on making or getting a press pass for being members of this site. Something saying that we're a photographer for the Dpchallenge website. I just don't know how to make one.
