This question isn't really photography related, but the store I went to deals with photos as well.
I went today to a shop to convert (copy, transfer) my 30+ year old 8mm reel of film to a dvd, with no processing whatsoever.
The store girl told me that they will own a copyright on a DVD, and that I am not supposed to make copies of it without their permission.
The film in question is personal family movie taken with 8mm camera umpteen years ago.
Do they have the right to put their copyright on something that is ultimately my (my father's) creative work. They merely copy from one media to another.
In photography world, it would be equivalent to have your local 1 hour photo take ownership of the copyright by merely copying photos from a compact flash to a CD?
Should I shop around or try to talk some sense into this store?
(not so many stores offer transfer from 8mm these days)
Thanks,

This is an interesting question...
Book publishers hold copyright on the publication itself but not the content. For instance, there are lots of publications containing Edgar Allen Poe works of literature, which, in itself, is not copyrighted. The publication of the collective works is copyrighted by the publisher thought.
The service you are using could claim copyright to the publication (the DVD itself) but not the content. So, I'm guessing that you could not legally make copies of the DVD.

Fine, and I don't want to/don't plan to make copies of the DVD.
There is about 300' of film, and I plan on doing post-processing on it (creating chapters, adding music, purging uninteresting parts) and basically producing my own DVD.
Do you see anything wrong with it (and John, I am not asking you for a legal opinion, just a common sense comment:-)
thanks,

I would not see anything wrong with it personally.
