I was angry all day until I realized that I just needed to do my thing and let people fall where they may.

Here's a new frontpage to our site - see whacha think.

I like it but I don't think the general public will 'get it'.

Good way to vent.

I think you were premature in ing your post, since I think the website falls into that category. More seriously, I think that page will drive away not only those people you don't want as customers, but their friends too - who you may well want as customers.

Your approach in the letter could be described as 'alternative' yet the site design and photography are quite traditional. I think you're going to miss out on a lot of business because it reads as if you're being very defensive and insecure.

If you want this style of pitch to work then you ought to go the whole hog and present the site and your work in a very unusual manner to attract an audience who would like something that bit different, but to be honest I think just presenting good photos is what people want to see when making a big commitment like this.

I thought the bride was suppose to be the prima donna? :P

I agree with Jon, though. It just looks like you're being defensive and taking up your toys and going to play with the other kids that are better than the potential reader. It's going to put off a lot of people.

But boy don't I feel better.

The page is sarcasm, it's not going public. However, as strikingly angry, defensive and attacking as it is, it would work in the right context. That's the sad part. I was angry, so I wrote an angry page. I am not planning to use it. I've vented, I feel better. And it would work!

Just a question... I realize this is sarcasm and you say this is not going public, but couldn't someone do a search and find this page?
06/11/2005 04:15:54 PM · #8
Depends. Maybe in a couple weeks when Yahoo indexes it and they search for "idiot bride" ;)

I'll take it down tonight probably. I'm still getting a chuckle out of it and there's no way for anyone to find it tonight.

:D

Thanks! I always do that when I'm VERY upset!

"Dear Bride Who Owes Us Money,

I'll torch your negatives in 3 weeks. Hope to hear from you in 2 or less. Have a good day.

Love,
Matt"

Sometimes something good comes of rants....

I just checked out your web site and I love the photos with the Bride and Groom in the grassy field with the Autum trees. Is there anyway to purchase one of these photos? They are beautiful and rather generic (meaning it could be any bride or groom).

Man...I'd take out that whole second paragraph and then some. Let your photos speak for your site...not what you have to say or how well you 'bash' other photographers.
06/11/2005 05:27:24 PM · #14
Matt, because you mention your business in your DPC profile, it is linked to both your real name and your username. Anyone can Google either and get access to all your forum posts, even if it does not appear in the last 10 posts made list. You might recall that Google creates a cached image of each web page it crawls.

Any potential client for anyone's business (if mentioned in the bio) has access to any forum post via the above method.

So what happened to you launching that flash website that you claimed you did yourself, but was really just a TemplateMonster.com site template?

As several people have pointed out, your postings are easily accessible by someone doing google research on your name... and a good number of your posts would certainly be a turn off to potential customers. Including this one.

I think you are the only one that found it funny. In reality it made you sound pompous.

*shrug*

If they find it and don't get it, and don't realize it's a joke, and don't realize that everyone has bad days, then I'd say screw them and I don't want them as a client anyways. I have enough clients this year who get my sense of humor, who are funny and who understand that I'm NOT the photographer next door. I don't worry too much about what people think of me, personally. I'd add that to the list in fact.

I took the flash site down because I couldn't get it to do what I wanted. I said I "learned" flash. I learned enough to get that site up. You do it.

Hey Mav,

Take a look at this article I wrote a few years back for my DJ business and sister site (Your Dream Wedding). It will give you a few ideas on how you might turn this letter's perspective into a positive thing.

I dealt with the same frustration until it became one of the most well traversed pages at my old site.

Hiring a Wedding DJ

I already do. It's what I do for a living. Internet development. If you had really "learned" flash, you should have been able to get it to do what you wanted.

So people are supposed to come to you, instantly see that you are the greatest on earth and that there is no other, and book you no questions asked? If you're trying to put potential customers in their place in a sarcastic manner, I don't think it worked, even if it is all in jest. All that comes across is how highly you think of yourself.

Yes. That would make my job easier!

lol

It's "jest" for photographers - who obviously don't get it either! It's a JOKE. HOLY crapola!

What happened today? You had some person knock your style or something?

If the page isn't public, why is it that the public can view it??
06/11/2005 09:22:06 PM · #24
I have a screen capture of the page that might come in handy in the future!

Seriously though, I don't see the humor in it. I think that you as a professional, who has written many articles for this site, who is trying to let others learn from your experience in setting up your own studio and run your own photography business, have just discredited the professional reputation you may have gotten from your postings and work. Some times it's best left unsaid and not put on public forums for all to see.

Let your work and words speak for you, they should be strong enough to get the clients you're looking for.

Maybe you should have said in bold letters... this is a joke...sometimes how I feel as a photograher, but obviuosly I value my customers and this is NOT on my web site.......its just a cheesy way of getting out my frustration.

I dunno, I found it funny.
