What does darkness mean to me?

Darkness is all about absence.
An absence of light, yes.
But darkness to me is much more than that;
Darkness is an absence of that which I love ΓΆ€“
Of familiar friendships and laughter-filled hours;
Of sunshine and people and flowers;
Of exotic journeys and exciting experiences;
Of the opportunity to learn something new;
Of the smell of coffee, baked bread and my favourite perfume;
Of the taste of bitter-sweet chocolate and mangoes
Of the sound of birdsong,
the beat of the music,
the gurgling of a stream;
Of the feel of hands clasping my hands
And soft lips upon my own;
What does darkness mean to me?
Above all, darkness is an absence of love;
And an absence of life.

Thanks, Laurie.
I wrote it just now, in response to the question asked in the description for the Darkness challenge - What does darkness mean to you?

Thanks for sharing :-) The idea that darkness represents an absence of life is noteworthy. Personally, as I'm scared to death (no pun intended) of the dark so for me the darkness has a more tangible presence than most people! lol

I'm scared of the dark too... when I was a kid I used to tie my school tie around my wardrobe door handles just incase... but this fear isn't strong enough to be classified as a phobia so it's not too bad.

I'm glad it was insightful.

Great poem Kavey, I think it works well for the 'absence' side description of this challenge. My submission captures several particular absences which are important to me, as well as some presences. So many possibilities in this challenge, I think it'll be very interesting to see the submissions, I'm pretty excited about it!

Does this mean I can submit my birds shot for the darkness challenge too?

;)

In all seriousness, nice poem and thank you for sharing it.

edit: the sad thing is that i don't even have a birds shot, so i don't know what i'm talking about :(

LOL
Hey now I'm curious about what that missing post, above, said!
Thanks folks...

And how exactly does one show the ABSENCE of birdsong in a photo? I guess you could show a bird with it's beak taped shut but... I'm thinking it wouldn't score too well! ;o)

Awesome poem, Kavey. Thank you for sharing. It speaks to me :)

I really love good poetry and there is another short poem about darkness which I would like to share, (hope you like it)

Heart Of Light

"Don't be afraid of the Darkness, hence the light is resting there.

In absence of darkness, the stars will not be seen !

Don't be afraid of the darkness, hence the light is resting there.

Don't be afraid of the darkness, which carries the heart of light"

Erik Blomberg (Swedish Poet)

If anyone have some more good poems about darkness, I would love to hear them :)

Thanks for that poem, Sonda, very nice.

Robert, thanks. I used to write a lot when I was younger, but haven't for years. I always wrote free form stuff, never followed the various rythmic rules and all that.
