There were no cds or cassettes even when I was a teen. There were records and albums. There was also a generation gap making it difficult to listen to new music without inviting protest and/or conflict. In Europe, we had pirate stations which broadcasted our poison from ships or a plane. Radio Caroline and Radio Clementine were two of them. Wolfman Jack was the voice.
My meager collection (by today's standards) consisted of:
Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Little Richard, Carl Perkins, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, BB King, Robert Johnson, Leadbelly, Elvis, John Mayall, Ray Charles, Joan Baez, the Beatles, Bob Dylan and a speech by JF Kennedy.

my brand, spankin' new (at the time) 1978 Ford LTD had a kickin' 8-track stereo and i was almost always listening to Journey's "Infinity" tape. the songs "Feeling That Way" followed by "Anytime" just gave me chills. if i wasn't listening to Journey, i was listening to Alice Cooper or Deep Purple. |

McGuire Sisters, Kingston Trio, Johnny Cash, Elvis, Ray Charles, Jimmy Rodgers, Dinah Shore, Conny Francis, Little Richard..... old dudes that very few of you would recognize and they were not on a cassette machine, but an RCA 45 rpm record changer.
Ah, those were the days...

whoa, this one's good!!! ;)
I remember a whole summer with Jethro Tull's "Thick as a Brick" runing on my cassette player, all summer long, all day long, over and over again...
I guess I was kinda freaky then... and maybe still now!! XD

No tape decks here either, just good old vinyl. Some of my favorites were the Partridge Family, Grassroots, Paul Revere and the Raiders and the Monkees (I was sure I was going to marry Peter Tork or David Cassidy). Then I fell in love with Rod Stewart :) Guess I just showed my age, huh??? |

I don't remember what my first cassettes were but my first favorite was a mangled partially recorded mixed tape that had been through at least a dozen hands I got in 1981. One band on the tape that really struck a nerve was Black Flag. The three songs of theirs on the tape convinced me that everything else I was listening to at the time was destined for the garbage.
From then on it was bands like:
Minor Threat
Misfits
The Dickies
The Ramones
Dead Kennedys
Corrosion of Conformity
DI
The Vandals
Suicidal Tendencies
Aggression

Okay. I win for odd woman out... mine was full of classical music especially music by Bach and Mozart. I also loved classical guitar and flamenco. The only popular group I liked was The Beetles and they were really around when I was a young adult, not a teen. Rock and roll was the in thing when I was a teen and I only pretended to like it to fit in. Actually I never did including Elvis. My favorite activity in school was choir - I sang in two - and my favorite thing to sing was madrigals. I still sing. Have been since I was twelve and I won't say how long that's been. And I still love classical music though I've expanded my love to include all eras from early music to contemporary. I also really love world music especially South American, African, Irish and tropical Island music especially Cesaria Evora. I still don't like much pop music. Ann
