Sorry, not been about much and mucho busy with work and other stuff.
Yes, I'll be in London August 20th/21st and wouldn't mind meeting up with some like minded folk to help avoid getting me arrested in Trafalgar Square.
Not sure what/ where you'd like to do. I'm game to do a lot of the standard touristy stuff - only been to London a couple of times before.
Suggestions on where to stay would be good too... |

Where to stay, dunno though you're welcome to kip on the folding bed in the spare room if you can cope with a house that looks like it's been burgled, or if not ask June for recos on low cost hotels in town.
Check on lastminute.com for offers on some decent places that are centrally located... they have some pretty good deals on.
Let's make it Saturday to give old farties like me a day to recover before work on Monday...
As to what and when, I'm easy, whatever you and others fancy.

Looks as though I won't be able to make it, as I should be on holiday. Doing the standard touristy stuff in August sounds like a lot of fun (note: for the avoidance of doubt, the foregoing is completely irony-free. I love the touristy stuff), so I shall be doubly sad to miss it.
I'll watch out for GTG 6, though.

June, I don't think anyone can make any guarantees for you.
Those of us who have signed up no doubt fully intend to attend but who knows what might happen between now and then.
For example if there's another attack just before it and the tube is all f****d up then I'd say it might very well not happen.

20th is definitely a date I can make, but I don't think June will be able to come down that weekend (as I think she's got a break in her schedule for the bank holiday weekend instead)...

Def' up for the 20th, can currently do the following weekend if people are around, but other plans form quickly and easily, so make yourselves known if you want to do the 27/28th.

Thanks...
Given that I PMd everyone about the thread to point them to it and ask for updates, I haven't heard back so don't really know what is going to happen at all!

I'm still not sure what's going on. Sorry to be crap about it. May not even be going to the UK now, all a bit up in the air and in the hands of lawyers :( |

Darling, now you're a pro I doubt it will ever be less manic but... you're coming up with some awesome pics.... perhaps we'll see you one of these years! ;p
Incidentally there was an article on gig photography (which may or may not be of interest for your mentor group) in an August issue of one of the photography magazines I bought - didnt read it as not my thing but let me know if you're interested and I'll work out where I put the darn thing and let you know the title of the magazine.

Thanks Kavey, there have been quite a few out this month... a really interesting few articles in this week's Professional Photographer which includes an article with a Getty photographer backstage at Live8 (git!). |

The one I'm talking about is issue 35 of Digital Photographer - I hadn't read this one before and bought this issue to assess it...

I think I read it... I talked about it in my mentoring group... this is what I said:
'I picked up a copy of 'Digital Photographer' today, which I recommend to everyone in this group (UK only). There's an article about gig photography, focusing on festivals... the advice is pretty consistent with what I've been advising, I'm glad to say!
I'll sum the article up here:
Go to festivals, you'll have loads of photos you won't get anywhere else. Make sure you have plenty of storage.
The pit is really tough to get into, Glastonbury get over a thousand applications (and I got one, woohoo!). If you don't have a pass to the pit, shoot the less popular bands earlier in the day by the front barrier (I told you so!). Many of the pros started off this way (I was doing this last year, and is how I got my passes for this year).
Don't shoot right in front of the performers, the mike will get in the way of the face. Empathise with the music, think about how your photos reflect the energy of the music. For example, go in close for jazz, use wide-angle and get in close for rock.
Don't shoot the obvious stuff, find the quirky stuff for your reportage shots. Dusk is the worst time for bands, unless you're on the stage and can catch the sky.
The article goes on to say that you should do anything for the right shot, describing how he evades security to get on stage, but you'll see lots of conflicting advice on this. You may want to go back next year, so be careful who you upset.
If you want to go pro, it's up to you to contact picture editors but this is extremely competitive and you need a lot of perseverance and tenacity. It doesn't pay a lot, about £150 plus minimal expenses (I thought it would become more... damn!).
Don't do it for the glamour, do it for passion. Discover new bands. More and more people are doing it now, discover what makes you different.'
Thanks for the heads up though! |
