A person over on dpreview just noticed that the 20D is no longer in the dropdown menus for the download library and no longer has an image on the EOS Camera Systems page.

Anyone hear any rumors about a replacement to be launched soon?

LOL wait a year or so. ( I highly doubt it )

Wow, your right, not on their EOS page anymore. Hmmm...

Well, it just came back on the EOS Systems page.

Canon must have been teasing me because I get different results after refreshing. They must have it missing on one of their servers.

Very weird. I click on the 20D, it takes me to a 350xt popup, and the 20D didappears from the main menu...

Robt.

Just been there myself looking for something...

Me thinks their web server/developers are having some 'issues' as the 1DMKII page at one stage took me to the 10D page with some broken images, then it came back, and I can't see the 20D pages, although I know it was there yesterday.. Odd.

Cheers, Me.

Canon announced the 20D circa August 2004. It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if there's an upgrade this year.

I'm not so sure. IMHO, the 20D is quite a polished product. 8MP, fast focus, 5fps. The only thing missing is a tougher sealed body. (That would take a big byte out of 1D sales)
Maybe a 10-12MP EOS3-based body with some EF-S L lenses? But that will not happen until the rumoured 1D/1Ds "merged" camera is ready.
Then I would seriously consider switching.

just heard from the wife yesterday that the 300d is being discontinued,
mostly replaced by the 350 but the 300 still has some advantages.

They just announced the 20Da. Hmmm, modified low pass filter. Sounds like it's designed for astro photography and IR.

So that was prolly the site glitch.

I like the size, the 350 feels too small in my big mits.

Also:

"In addition the camera has a partially transmissive mirror which enables live focusing on the LCD monitor (this can only be done for short times and requires the mirror to be locked up)."

The first half of that sentence doesn't seem to go with the part in brackets. If it is partially transmissive, why would it need to be locked up (out of the optical path) to enable living focusing ?

Sounds like they just let you do a live preview with the mirror locked up, and the first half of the sentence is just marketing BS to make it sound like something that isn't just a software kludge. You can only
do it for short periods of time because the sensors overheat too much to be useful.

I was thinking that. I just quoted what I read!

I thought the next unit coming out was to supersede the 1Ds Mark II and was supposed to have 32 mega-pixels?

I very seldom find myself wishing my 350D was bigger ;p

The 20Da was announced at the beginning of the year. It isn't anything new. And yes, it is designed specifically for astro photography and they didn't appear to be marketing it to mainstream consumers.

I doubt the 20D glitch is related to the 20Da.

It is probably just site maintenance. If they were coming out with a 20D replacement, they likely wouldn't completely remove the 20D. When the Rebel XT came out... they didn't remove the original Rebel from the Canon site. It is still there.

How long since the 20D was released? How long between the 10D and 20D?
I know the 350 was 18 months after the 300. A reasonable time frame. Also, the competetion may be driving a move on Canon's part - either from something just out or expected out soon.

The 300 had 3 months of rebates prior to the 350 release, and the 300 is still on the website because it is still a current model.

When does cannon typically release now models? August? November? If they ahve a typical pattern expect them to stick to it.

This from Canon guru Bob Atkins (//www.bobatkins.com):

"[06/01/05] - Canon have announced that the EOS 20a will now be available outside Japan. Details of the 20a can be found on the Canon_Europe website. It's not on the Canon USA website - in fact right now, today, the EOS 20D isn't even there! I'm sure they'll correct that soon. Rumors that it has been discontinued are certainly premature. More likely someone hit the wrong key while trying to update the site...the EOS 20Da is a slightly modified 20D with enhanced red sensitivity for astrophotography applications. It is NOT an update of the EOS 20D."

Which pretty much sums up what a few of us have already said... it is most likely a website mistake and the 20Da is not replacing the 20D.
