I challenge everyone to go back and look at their 5s and see if they deserve a higher or lower score.
I used to have an art teacher in college. He would tell me that he tended to put Bs on most pieces because after looking at 250 of the same art piece and subject you tend to think they are all the same.
So, sometimes he would have to look through them again.
Do you get 5 happy?

Actually, I tend to get 6 happy..
but when I do vote.. (which isn't often these days, admittedly), I usually do a few passes and bump things around a bit. Initially though.. 6s are like cheap cigars in an old-fashioned maternity waiting room.

I tend to vote how I feel.

I tend to get 6 and 4 happy. But in the end I go back and bump some of the entries from both of those levels either up or down...

I think you will find that many of us initially vote 4,5,and 6 to group the photos and then go back and adjust up and down. Unfortunately that ends up leaving many 5's that do not get changed due to time limitations.

I first rate all the images - 4-7. Done
I go back and bump some 7 to 8-10. done.
I go back and bump 5-6 to 6-8. will do over the next week.
4s rarely get moved because I feel there is a major technical flaw in them.

Sorry if you think I'm 5 happy, but its better than 1-3.:)

that is good to hear that you all do that. I do the same thing. but there are those who don't. maybe they will read this thread and learn some good ideas for voting :)

I calibrate my voting based on the general quality of the challenge. If the challenge entries are overall very strong, I'm still going to try to make the bell curve top out in the 4-5-6 range, just as if the entries are overall rather weak.

I find some calibration necessary in any case, because if I were voting images in relation to the world at large, the average picture here would surely be 6 or 7. Broadly speaking, DPC folks take better pictures than most.

I generally start out voting 4-7s (with a few 8s & 9s, and an occasional 3). Then go back and look at every photo again (usually by initial vote grouping). Almost always I move the score up (with some exceptions) until I have at least 3 10s and a proportionate number (on a bell curve) of 9s, 8s, 7s, 6s, 5s (the majority), 4s, 3s, and sometimes a few 2s (rarely a 1).

I sometimes find that I'll move a score 2-3 pts up, less frequently 1-2 pts down. It's the 2nd run-through that I generally add comments as well. One thing I have found is that I usually leave comments for the 10s, 9s, and some 8s, and then always for the 1s, 2s, & 3s.

I think I'm pretty consistent in my evaluations - I got a great critique from a site member right after I first joined who outlined his/her guidelines for scoring and I have found that I follow the same basic principles. I do think that scoring the entries on a curve seems to be the most consistent and works best for me (from a scorer point of view - don't get me started on the scoree point of view - LOL).

Simply look at the average vote cast and this will tell you a lot.

Lately I tend to vote this way:
1. Place holders 4 – 5 – 6
2. Go to the 4̢۪s and bump upward if I see a photo that deserves a bump, rarely down.
3. Go to the 5̢۪s and bump up or down
4. Go to the 6̢۪s and bump up or down
5. If I have time go back through and make comments. Lately time is has been limited.

Sometimes, just for the heck of it, I will vote without using "5." This forces me to decide if it is a 4 or a 6. There are some pictures, though, that are just "5." :)

I start out like many here.... initially sort photos rated as 4-5-6, with a few that immediately go to 7 and a few that go to 3... then I go through and try to get 2 or 3 between 8-10, 3 to 6 between 7-8, and don't worry about anything less than my top 10 favorites, although I will correct anything that obviously is extremely off base... I am relatively new to this, and in the beginning my votes differed greatly from the average voter opinion, but I picked 2 of the top 3 photos for the recent Light challenge, so I am hoping my judging skills are improving, and I am happy to report that my challenge entries are (slightly) improving also. What bugs me is it seems that every challenge, my score seems to slowly fall the last few days of the challenge, as if people tend to look at their score, then go in and mark down their votes to put everyone in line with votes similar to what they receive... FYI...I consider a 5 an average photo, with nothing that stands out either positive or negative. My scores received initially have been less than 5, and recently seem to consistantly score above 5... no where close to a ribbon winner, but improving, which is why I am here (besides the fun, camaraderie, etc......)

I go the opposite ay generally i go thru and pick out all my 10s then 9 and so on , generally I seem to finish at around the6 level, comments I do the same starting at the top.

Or maybe in my case I'm just an average photographer. That don't bother me, I want to please others with my work but ultimately it's about pleasing myself. If I'm happy, things are OK.
See my OVERALL bell curve. Out of 9000+ votes received people can't be wrong, I wouldn't think.

Perhaps on this site you may score in the 5-6 range, but don't neglect the expertise of your peers here... I've been extraordinarily impressed with not only the phenomenal photography I have seen here, but I've also been impressed with the grace & selflessness those experts are willing to share their knowledge, experience, & secrets here on DPChallenge. I've looked at other photography websites and this one is (IMHO) by far the most educational, competitive, & gratifying (when you finally break the 5.0 barrier - LOL). There are some damn good photographers from all around the world here. I feel like if you can hold your own here, then you're much more than the "average" photographer...

I learn more every day from this site - and I've finished at the VERY bottom of more than one challenge - but I'm determined to not let it get me down and keep coming back for more. I forget who said them, but I like the quotes that "You can only learn by failing" and "Unless there is someone ahead of you, you have nothing to strive for".

Case in point---- I was sitting here with a 5.3936 average after 249 votes. One person voted, and my avg dropped to 5.38---- that means someone dropped on me a whopping 2 vote (do the math)... some people get a "kick" out off waiting till the end of the challenge and dropping peoples averages... I am convinced of it... so the key is to have fun and not worry about it... my photo is not a 10... and it is not a 2.... it is a 4.5,5, 6, maybe 6.5...thats it... I am not a professsional photographer, or Photoshop wiz... I am an observer of the world with a camera...I am a frustrated artistic mind with occasional good ideas but limited and untrained talent... doesn't keep me from plugging along...don't let it get you down either...

I hate to admit that I have given one's because I feel that if you try you get at least a 3. BUT... if there was no apple in the apple challenge you would get a one.
And I don't think people should get so nit pickey as 'oh- the challenge said one apple and you had more so I scored you down...' (as I saw in one thread)

Very well put. I feel the same way, and coincidentally, my score is almost exactly a where yours is, and I just had the same drop in average.
