Yay! i just placed my order for the 50/1.8 II. I'm sooo excited, I can't wait to get my hands on this lens and play! Should be here on Thursday. I'm counting down the hours... =]

Prepare yourself for a real sharp lens, great toy!

It is such a SMALL lens, physically. I love the shallow DOF you can get with it. And I like the bokeh - very smooth.

My new lens will be here wednseday...(sigma 18-50 F2.8). I'm not sleeping till then!

Sweet. You better sleep! You'll need to be able to function properly when it comes! :-)

I've been thinking about getting the lens too b/c it's sharp, fast, and cheap, but what do most people use it for? e.g. landscape, architecture, portraits, etc.
It seems to long for landscapes and architecture, too short for portraits and wildlife. I'm wondering what I would use it for.
05/30/2005 10:02:17 PM · #13
how close can it focus to?
05/30/2005 10:03:53 PM · #14
it works well for portraits, esp. head and shoulders. Great lens for a lot of situations due to it's pretty close focusing (1.5 feet). Debatebly it's good for indoors such as theatre, bands, or anything of that sort. Take a look at the photos on the site that it was the lens for. there's a pretty broad range!

The bokeh is nice but in some situations the 1.4 will have noticably better bokeh.

It's perfect for portraits, being the equivalent (in terms of FOV) of a 80mm lens when on a 10D.

I prefer about 100mm or so for portraits and use my 70-200 f2.8L for portraits. I like keeping a bit of distance from my subject so they aren't as intimidated by the camera.

Are you saying they are less intemidated by a huge, white, monster of a lens than the 50mm? Surely not... =]

As opposed to being intimidated by that ICBM sized lens.........

I find it particularly useful for stock-type shots. Examples:

And outdoor still life:

Not to mention the occasional high-key portrait, which can be difficult with slower lenses:

How would it be for sports images? Been looking at that lens too.

A 50mm on a Canon dSLR is the equivalent of a 75 or 80mm on a 35mm SLR, a length with which I'm intimately familiar. I used to have a f:1.8 lens in that range that was my main walking-around lens back in the day, it's a great spontaneous-shooting lens. It's not what you'd carry around for landscape or architectural work, but it's a great detail lens and most of my off-the-cuff shooting was just that: detail work.

It's my experience, for what it's worth, that a zoom lens is a little "lazy" as a walkaround shooting lens. One has a tendency not to work so hard, to stay in one place and just zoom around, as it were. A prime lens forces a little more migration throughout a scene, and this tends to open up more photographic possibilities. A very short telephoto, which this lens is, with a wide maximum aperture, has wonderful optical characteristics. It's a fine compromise betwen DOF and angle of view, and when it can focus as close as this one can it's just exceptionally versatile in terms of what you can get out of it.

When (if) I get a dSLR, this will be one of the first lenses I acquire.

Robt.
