I have been playing with this

and have come up with the following colour variations
a b c
d e

I have a number of questions
1. Can I make a better crop ?
2. which version do people prefer ?
3. do they look too forced ?

am I barking up the wrong tree?

edited as there were 2 d's

1. To me the direction of the line of posts is going in the wrong direction and puts a strain on the entire image. In general, in western culture, we look at thinks from left to right so flipping the image horizontally I think would make the image feel less strained. Also, the horizon is slightly tilted.

2. My favourite version is a. The colours are very serene and this image appears to have the most contrast.

3. If your referring to the colour selection, no. If in general, see my response for 1.

how are you doing this- just a hue thing?
Because you might want to play around with other ideas...

You beat me to it. I was busy flipping and cropping. Don't know enough about PS to do this. But to me, this image screams out for selective color.

1. Yes, possibly this one:

2. Most people prefer this one:

...oh wait, did you say "version?"

3. They do now...

hehehe - I'm sorry - it's Friday (like that matters). ;-)

Personally, I like either b or d.

a) Looks too washed out, lifeless
b) Love the brilliance of the color. Maybe a very small bit too much red?
c) Doesn't do anything for me. I would rather see it in B/W
d) I really like the colors in the water, but the sky color looks wrong.
e) Again, moving back towards washed out. No real impact on me.

On the cropping, you might try to take a little off of the bottom. Get rid of the rocks in the lower left. I don't see as they add anything to the photo. I think it would also bring your subject, the pier, into the bottom third of the photo. That would appease the "Rule of Thirds" aficionado's.

Forced, I would say yes on "c". I have never seen anything that looked that color naturally. (perhaps I have led a sheltered life?) "b" is also a bit strong, but that is what drew my eye to it. I'm thinking if you could get it about halfway between "b" and "d", it would look better.

I like B & D...

I think it might be interesting to start a crop AT the left most piling group.

I think you have lost the subtle colors. They could be nice with a little different processing. There are some blues, pinks and purples in the original that are muted but could be brought out more and look more true to the scene. Sorry. Just my opinion. I'm getting a little jaded with all the dramatic(post processed) colors on this site.

B & D, but then I again I'm always a sucker for crimson sunsets.
Cut a little off of the bottom
