Recently, I started noticing 2 dark smudges in my photos and when looking through the viewfinder. I have cleaned my lens, but the smudges are still there.

Does anyone have any ideas on where these smudges are coming from, how they got there, and how to eliminate them? They appear in blank areas of the photos (like blue sky).

Your sensor might be dirty. Sounds like that is the problem. Do you have any samples we could see?

Try this :

stop down the lens as much as possible (highest aperture number)
Set it in aperture priority mode and over expose by about 1 stop.

Take a picture of a blank wall, or the sky or similar, don't worry
about camera shake, just try and point at something pretty uniform and
well lit.

Take the resulting shot, and do an auto-levels or auto-contrast in photoshop. All the spots are dust on the sensor.

If the spots you are seeing appear then, then that is probably your problem.

Also, at the same time do this with the lens wide open, you should not see the spots any more, as the light comes from more than a single point source, so diffuses around the dust and isn't so noticeable.

Yes I do. How do I attach it to a forum message? I could e-mail it to you.

Gordon - that is very interesting. The smudges appear only at aperture F11, but not at F2.8.

How can I get rid of the dust?

Crop down to the area you think it is and send it to me. I would be happy to look...

That's dust on the sensor then. It only appears at the smaller apertures because the light comes from more of a 'point' source - so it is all travelling at 90 degrees to the sensor, rather than scattering around the dust.

(GI)If you are an experienced electronics kind of person you could do it yourself. Search the dpreview forum about sensor cleaning and you'll find a guide for the 6900 and more recently also for the 602.
The camera's need to be taken apart to get to the sensor. The 602 is a pain to open up, the 6900 is relatively easy. Ask j_kirk from oz.(/GI)

Fuji should clean it under warranty. While most people think that it is dirt being sucked in, the people I spoke only found specks of skin from asian origin. Someone at the Fuji factory seems to have a skin problem. :)
The dust problem is not limited to Fuji's, it happens with 5700's, 707's and Dimages as well. One of the few digital yet unresolvable bugs.

It is said that an adaptor with a UV filter attached permanently to the camera should prevent any problem. I doubt it, but have it on anyway.
