Apparently they will not be imposing a photo ban on the NYC Subways.

Here is a link to a an article in our local Sunday newspaper:

No Ban On Subway Pix.

I would think there are many great photos waiting to be taken there. Nice Job NY! Not overeacting, you set an example for the world!

It's about time we are waking up that curtailing our own rights does not keep us safer. We should do the same thing with bans on photography on bridges and tunnels etc. - posting existing photos of these places on the net will hilight the futility of bans.

This quote from the newspaper article link cited above will hilight what we can do to be safer:

"For example, Browne noted that cops stopped two men photographing tracks leading into a tunnel under the East River in Queens in November 2003. The men turned out to be Iranian intelligence agents and they were booted from the country."
We can stop letting in citizens of hostile nations. Yes a complete ban. No more tourist visas. No more student visas. And yes, these nations are almost all invariably Islamic.

Wow, a little common sense is like a breath of fresh air! From NYC no less.

We're moving into "Rant" territory here, but you realize that the vast majority of Islamic immigrants we have are good people, right? And that the majority of the people actually convicted in the US for planning or attempting terrorist acts in the last decade have been... white? (For bonus points, tell me what the nationality was of the 9/11 terrorists, and what the current US relationship is with that country).

"Hey, I've got an idea... why don't we keep anyone from Kansas or Texas or Oregon from leaving their state?"

Sheesh.

OK, I can see the rationale for including Kansas, and maybe Oregon with the way the volcanic activity is going, but why the heck would anyone in their right mind ever want to leave Texas anyway? ;o)

Exactly Zed. WHat an idiotic notion, ban anyone from an islamic country.
That would be like me saying americans should not be allowed to leave america because there are a handfull of crackjob fundermentalist baptists that believe it is okay to rape and leave for dead people that have different life styles to thier own.

The men and women fighting the jihad are fundermentalists. Anyone in thier right mind knows a fundermentalist is crazy - it has nothing to do with thier country or root religion.

Judging a nation based on a media sensationalised minority is racist.

footnote - i have lived in america and the middle east (and am from neither country) and quite frankly my experience with Arabs has been a lot more positive than with Americans.

All I wanted to do was post an informational link about the issue of the NYC Photo Subway ban. Lets not turn this thread into something worse.

Thanks... in the interest of keeping Vince's original thread on topic, can we either discontinue the foreign policy discussion or move it elsewhere?

Thanks,
Terry

I am thrilled about this decision! My husband and I will be visiting NYC this summer, and we now have more of a chance of being treated like tourists instead of terrorists.

Our Australian accents will help, too. If we should get questioned about taking photos, I found it helpful to be a female caucasian to start off with, and once they hear an Aussie accent, they often get distracted and start talking about wanting to see Australia, instead *g*.
So thank you to all you Americans who enjoy talking to us Aussies :-)

Oh goodness!!! Let's all get so happy that they decided to not exploit our rights anymore!

It's a shame. Note that they can still 'intercede' at will if you are photographing. Freedom or not -- that is the question. It's a right to take pictures in a public place, not a privilege.
