I went into Shenandoah National Park in Virginia today to try to find and take pictures of some fawns. I was a few weeks late from the peak viewing time of May 8th, but I was still hopeful.

After 5 hours of hiking around, mostly in a big circle around an area called Big Meadows, I had still not found any fawns, although I saw plenty of deer.

Deciding to pack it in, I headed back to the car, and along the way I spotted a lone doe behind a tree about 50 feet off the path. I approached her as quietly as possible, and discovered that she had given birth to two fawns not more than an hour earlier. She was still in the process of cleaning them off.

I did not get too close for fear of startling her too much, but I hung out nearby and took several photos. Apart from occasionally grunting at me she tolerated that well :-)

I can't recall the last time I had such an awe-inspriring moment photographing creatures in the wild. There is just something about new life that fills me with awe and wonder. These are a few images I wanted to share from that event today.

Rich, most of us never in our lifetime get to see something like this. Awesome opportunity, and wonderful photographs!

Very nice shots and an interesting story, thanks for sharing. Your 100-400? I think darkness is the only thing that would have torn me away if I had been in your place.

Yep, the 100-400. I posted this as my PaD as well, I think they do a little better at 800 pixels.

Amazing shots!! You are so lucky that you came across this scene, as well as not freaking out the mama.

Rich,

I am in awe! Living in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan we are surrounded by deer, moose, wolves, etc....but still rarely get the opportunity that you just got here! Makes me want to go out this week
and scan the area.
