I've had some wonderful comments from Both Justine and John also...
John more than once has made my day with his comments, and I will say that his was the second comment I received on this weeks challenge and after reading what he said and that he gave me a 10 he made my whole week and yes it is the best scoring photo for me so far. Fingers crossed here this could be my first 6. |

Not far off the 1000 mark are kiwiness, Swashbuckler (the creator of this thread deserves some serious credit, too!), and PTLParsons, rounding out the top 5. Thanks to everyone who makes this site what it is.

Well...mine's 251/1351, but a lot of those were made back before we had the "mark as helpful" button...I don't know how to check only the comments made since then. I've been finding most of the comments I've received lately HAVE been helpful, even/especially where they point out something they don't like. |

Mine is 701 / 1919. The only thing that bugs me is that people don't seem to find most of my Critique Club critiques helpful. I take a long time to write them and I think its probably the only reward for being in the Critique Club. True I do get my pics moved up into the front for CC's, but I request them about half the time. I try to give suggestions as often as possible, but maybe people are considering the source as part of how helpful the critique is :) In that respect, I guess I don't blame them.
I think its hard to judge the effectiveness of a commenter based on the "helpful" critiques because some people only check the ones who actually like the picture and say something nice, instead of the ones who are boldly honest and effectively critical.

Posting comments to photos is not really about 'numbers'. If I feel motivated to say something about a photo, i try to say it. I don't let myself get wrapped up in who thinks my comments are useful or not. I never even go back to check to see if someone checks my comments as useful. It's really irrelevant. Don't let commenting here become a game of numbers... do it because you want to... not to be on some list of numbers... :)

Couldn't agree more. In fact, this most recent round I would only mark a comment helpful if they commented on some technical or other important aspect of the photo, and didn't check the 'great shot' or 'amazing' comments because while they make me feel good, they aren't helpful (I felt bad not checking these, but I also feel that since there is always a lot of discussion about making sure to give comments etc. and some people talk about how they try to comment on each and every photo, I guess I'm like 'thanks for your support, but you ain't saying anything here')

I often browse through the "Recently Commented-On" photos specifically to read the CC reviews...but I'm not allowed to mark THOSE as helpful. Most of the reviews I've gotten myself, the reviewer emailed me to let me know it was there, so I was able to check it and respond very easily.
The reviews are useful to others besides the photographer...try not to get discouraged by what are probably invalid statistics! |

Thanks Swash\All.
I must tell you three things-
#1 Like Johnboy says it's not really about 'numbers' and there's a large number of folks that make this place what it is.
#2 I've gotten back much more then I've given. People have really poured good, helpful information my way. I have learned a lot here and couldn't put a price on it. I'm very appreciative.
#3 My husband will tell you>...I can talk wallpaper of a wall. Leaving comments comes pretty natural to me.

Well, somewhat misunderstood again. This thank you was supposed to represent a milestone for this site and it's growth. The Helpful Comments were the best available indicator of this site's stated objective, to help promote and educate digital photographers. It was also a nice pat on the back to two that I feel go a long way to help this site be all it can be. A way to encourage others to comment on photos and that the effort doesn't go completely unrecognized.
