My daughter is embarking on a 3-week long trip to Europe. I suspect that one 512MB flash card would not be enough :), and she does not want to take a laptop along for uploading the photos (wise decision). I know we could buy a portable hard-disk storage, but those are rather expensive and could be broken/stolen on the road. My idea is that she could just burn CDs along the way. The question is, do such services exist out there? I know there are lots and lots of Internet shops and cafes in Europe, but I never tried to burn CDs there off my CF card. Anyone had such experience?

Photo studios/shops (places where you can print your films and digital images) may offer copying to CDs... but someone would have to confirm this for the cities she's planning to visit.

Oh man...I JUST saw info on one of those in either Popular Photography or Photographic Magazine. It caught my attention because I was thinking of something for summer vacation myself and this device allowed you to burn CD's right from you memory card. It does exist...if I see the ad in the next day or two I'll repost here, unless of course someone else can remember it directly. |

There are many places that will burn your images to CD, but you'd have to find one every time your card filled up. You can even brind a portable CD Burner and do it yourself without a computer, but then you're back to the broken/stolen issue.
The best solution might be to just buy an extra flash card or two. NewEgg has a 1Gb 30x Transcend CompactFlash card for $70 shipped. |

Maybe you could get something like the Epson P-1000 or P-2000.

They have either a 10GB or 40GB hard drive and an LCD display. They are a bit of money but she can also view the photos and share them. I've seen some other toys and there was one that had a shape like a Game Boy (clamshell) and had a display and a hard drive but cannot remember who makes it. I suspect it was made by one of the CF flash memory companies.

For a 3-week trip? Maybe we're just excessive but while I could probably last 3 days on one of our 2-gig cards (well, I would have done until I was converted to the RAW side of the force) I don't think Kavey would last much over a day. Couldn't do a 3-week trip without a couple of XDrives at the very least :-)

Notice- If one plans to have a shop burn it to a cd, EXIF info can be altered because some places may automatically make adjustments to photos.
If she does go this route make sure she brings a nice case or cd holder to hold all the discs.

Depends on the photographer. I averaged about 300 shots a day in Italy a few weeks ago. Other people might only take that many shots in a month. |

Amy, that looks great!
I assume you have tried it out and it works well?
I HAVE taken my little storage gizmo through airport security before, but I still worry about losing the files and would feel much better with CDs. |

Thank you guys for all this info - VERY helpful!. Actually, I decided to go ahead and purchase a "deluxe" version of that Kanguru gizmo (this one is discontinued),
so called Kanguru Slim FC-RW. The cheapest I found was $235 at DigitallyUnique (no tax/shipping) minus $30 rebate available from TigerDirect). It is twice the price but it works off the rechargeable battery, and doubles (triples) as a portable CD/MP3 player (don't need to be plugged in to listen to it) and DVD player - has both S-video and composite outputs! Pretty nifty device, I think.
ps. Comes with a remote control!

Too late, I already ordered mine.
But note that this place has $16.85 shipping vs 0.00 at DigitallyUnique, so I think I am ahead :)

I went to a photography shop when I was on holiday last year in Scotland, and asked them to back up my memory cards onto CDs. They used a kiosk in the shop, and everything looked great.
When I got home, I cried because the stupid %$£*@£** machine didn't just back up the photos, it compressed them, sharpened them, adjusted the levels, and they looked horrendous. I can't tell you how *^&*^&%&^$^&% I was. Sheesh, my blood is boiling a year later when I think about it. Don't risk it! |

thanks for the thread & question & solution !!!!! I just bought one, should be here in 2 days. I had been looking for a solution for my photo business. I needed something that could back up with battery power in the field.
It was either that or buy a gazillion more CF cards!! ('bout the same price) This should be much faster than downloading, the copying, then burning, then verifying on the iMac I have been traveling with. Even if it's not, at least I can burn 2 CD's at the same time. (I can use as many as 5-9 CF cards in a day during a large event)
