Maybe a good idea for a challenge to follow the "Curves" challenge would be a "Lines" challenge...

hey how about 'shapes!' ; )

Hmmm... Let me rephrase... Let's consider a LINE in it's mathematical definition :) In geometry, a line straight and a curve is a collection of points. I line could be a curve but not vice versa.
In the spirit of a photo challenge, a line could be interpreted many ways that could make a good challenge... People standing in line, a clothes line, a line of credit, football team defensive line, the goal line, and many other possibilities...
Shapes could be nice too... I have seen some nice SHAPES in the architecture challenge... Shapes would be good if it were differentiated from architecture... maybe "Shapes in Nature" or something similar... Shapes would also lend itsself to the 'unclothed' figure that has been discussed here recently... ;)
I'm not against nudity at all and I have done some nudes in the past. My primary interest there is strictly on the artistic (or my interpretation of art) side and I prefer black and whites too...
Cheers

I beg to differ! A line is a curve, for example:
x = y + n (a curve describing a straight line)
Mathematically speaking, *any* line is a curve. Not all curves are lines. Both curves and lines are collections of points generated by an equation.
Non-mathematically speaking, I don't think you can draw much distinction between a curve and a line, or we would wouldn't have the concept of curved lines. Perhaps you meant a "Straight Line" challenge. But even then, you could monkey with *either* challenge by shooting straight lines with a fish-eye lens to curve them, or shooting actual curves at an angle that would straighten them out. Wheee!
I love confusing things for no reason!

:)
Anyway, I love photographing subjects where lines (and curves) make up part of the image. As I was reading some of the other forums here, someone was speaking about leading lines and the rule of thirds. I have seen quite a few photographs where both of these concepts are used. If "straight lines" was a challenge topic, it would be a good opportunity to describe this concept.
I have attempted to read everything on this site in the last few days. There are a lot of photographers here and there are a lot of voters as well. Based on the photos and the comments I have read, it appears that this forum contains talent ranging from the beginning photographer to some very accomplished photographers. Anytime a challenge can help describe and teach a particular concept of photography, such as leading lines or the rule of thirds, It would be beneficial. Those who already know the concepts can practice them and those who don't can learn at the same time....

That's a really interesting idea... maybe we could have a few challenges directly related to specific elements of design, as a working tutorial.
Then we could all knowingly ignore them instead of accidentally breaking them!

the mouse is right (said the hatter to the queen of hearts) ....
Linear Function
Definition: Y is a linear function of X, if the graph of the function is a straight line
General form of a linear function is: Y = A+ BX
where Y and X are dependent and independent variables respectively and A and B are parameters. Parameters have specific names: A is called vertical intercept and B is called slope. If B > 0, then graphically a linear function is an upward sloping straight line
Slope of a Nonlinear Curve
The slope of a straight line is the same at all its points. The slope of a line representing a nonlinear relationship changes from one point to another. Such lines are usually referred to as curves
whats the point of all this? not sure but here's some possible ones:
1) people on the internet are major geeks 8-) 2) be really specific about your challenge suggestions because of 1):-p 3) who knew that photography meant you had to think so much??? I need to go lie down now ....

I'm in an upper level calculus class, but all this math is starting to confuse me. Do we really have to keep defining a curved/straight line? I think someone else already said this in another thread: The horse is dead. Let it rest in peace.

Let's not totally dominate the front page with this stuff, people, or someone will have to play whack-a-mole on y'all :-) |
