Gmail is a webmail service that includes more than 2 GB of storage. The backbone of Gmail is a powerful Google search engine that quickly finds any message an account owner has ever sent or received.

I have also plenty of invitations to spare, if anyone is interested just send me a pm.

It's a nice system, and I appreciate the 2gig free limit. But...
The way I understand it, they run a word search through your mails and then the process triggers ads being placed to accompany your mails. For example:
A woman writes her best friend on gmail about her personal difficulties. She's a single mom raising a six year old, and the boy is having a difficult time in school. She's also complaining that she's not getting dates, as men might not be so inclined to date a single mom with a young son. Her friend writes her back, and the woman is taken aback by the ads that appeared on the page. One is for a school specializing in helping "problem" children, and another is an invitation to join a support group for single moms with young kids, and a third for a dating service specializing in matching up single parents.

Caveat emptor applies here, particularly as gmail doesn't guarantee that once an email is deleted, it's gone for good. It specifically advertises that you don't need to ever delete due to the extremely large capacity that it's giving you. I think such records can be subpoenaed, and gmail won't/can't necessarily guarantee and protect your privacy if the government, etc decide they want to see your past mails.

I like gmail, and I use it a lot. But I don't use this for my very personal or potentially confidential mail. It's not that I have anything to hide, but rather I don't think some subject issues are anyone else's business, and I don't want a big brother snooping on my personal mails.

I've got free invites as well, if anyone wants it.

Rob,

I have a friend that is totally against g-mail. You can setup Outlook or Outlook Express to pull your gmail of the webpage and never see an ad. I believe hotmail or yahoo scans e-mail also for ad reasons. I use gmail for everything. I don't see a problem with it. If the government wnats my records then fine. I am sure if they want them and you are with AOL they can get them anyway.
