I really like the following photograph. It's one of my personal favorites. I am thinking of uploading a larger version to DPC Prints. Do you think it's worth my time making this one available as a print. Could you see someone possibly purchasing it? Perhaps a fan of nautical art?

I've sold copies of even my most boring shots which I thought noone would ever look at! With a shot as good as yours there is no point not putting it up! You won't sell any if you don't, so there's nothing to lose :)

And for those curious, that is the ship used in the recent movie "Master & Commander" based on the Patrick O'Brian novels. Too bad I did not take this for Silouhettes... :)

Go to DPCPrints and select 'My Account'. On that page you can select 'Sales History'.

Would be worthy of entering in the silhouette II challenge as well. I assume you have one even better than this one for the challenge?

Nope....sadly, it was taken outside of the challenge time-frame. But I have ideas for the silhouette (gotta be a french word, I can never spell it right).

theSaj,
which ship is it? Did you really shot it in San Diego? I'm asking because
I took this photo

on May 1 in Rosarito Beach, Mexico, where they really filmed "Master and Commander". It is not a real ship though, more like a film set.

(I was planning to enter it in the Dreams challenge, but changed my mind)

I think you should put it up as a print. There is someone out there they may enjoy that on their wall.

I think it's quite nice and you should definetly put it up, especially because of what Ben said, you won't sell any if you don't. It can't hurt. :-)

Itsimring,

Yes....I did take it in San Diego. That is so funny - definitely very similar mast structure. *lol*

And if makes tons of sense too. If you've never worked on a sailing vessel it is potentially 'extremely' dangerous. A swinging boom, even a small one, is more than enough to kill a man. So I would expect them to have a standing set for much of the filming in which the whole ship is not actually visible. (Also a lot easier to photograph then having another camera mounted on a moving ship near-by.)

But as it was explained to me, the vessel docked in San Diego is indeed the vessel used for filming in "Master & Commander". Also, if I recall correctly both the French and British ship were one and the same. They just painted the side of the ship a different color. (But I could be confused...maybe that was the Horatio Hornblower series...*ponder*)

Great series if no one has ever watched it...

Jenesis, speaking of prints....you should really make your "In the beginning" entry available too!

Well, I'll be darned. I didn't know about checking the sales history, and whatdayaknow - I sold one! Woohoo!

I was actually hoping to buy it first myself - just to make sure it is good quality (my own work, not the print processing). I'd feel bad if it wasn't. Guess that will be my project this weeked. Order the ones I haven't had processed yet!

I did this myself, actually I was needing prints to hang in a coffee shop so I uploaded them to dpcprints to get ones for myself and maybe sell some (wishful thinking on my part) :-). But I'm glad I did because some of them didn't meet my expectations once they were blown up so I ended up taking them off as prints ( my fault, not dpcprints). I'll probably do the same for the rest of them just to make sure people get what they pay for. (Assuming someone will acutally pay for one) :-)
Yes... I have self esteem issues. :-D

Thanks Saj, actually it is. Liberty in Blue is not but I might add it. :-)

Sorry, that was the one I was looking at earlier I think and clicked and didn't see a print option. Then when I saw your "In the Beginning" shot, fairly similar as a thumbnail - I thought they were one and the same.

;)

FYI I believe the name of that ship is the HMS Surprise
05/11/2005 01:11:15 PM · #24
Yes it is, but some nautical fans may remember it as the H.M.S. Rose (I think it was green or yellow back then)

H.M.S. Surprise

Yup...here she was as the H.M.S. Rose

I went and did it...it is now available as a print!
